Sanggye gamjatang restaurant: hot-and-cold summer dinner, Somunnan
In short
Somunnan Gamjatang Sanggye Branch (소문난감자탕 상계점) is a gamjatang and pork bone soup restaurant in Sanggye-dong, Nowon, Seoul, near Sanggye Station Exit 5. On a hot evening the writer ordered the special pork bone soup for 13,000 won, cold soba (naengmomil) for 10,000 won and a plate of sundae (Korean blood sausage) for 12,000 won; the soup came with 4 meaty chunks of pork spine and the sticky-rice sundae was piled high like a mountain. For a summer meal alternating hot pork bone soup with cold soba, Somunnan Gamjatang Sanggye Branch is a good fit.

How to get to Somunnan Gamjatang Sanggye Branch from Sanggye Station
Somunnan Gamjatang Sanggye Branch (소문난감자탕 상계점) is at 32 Hangeulbiseok-ro 24-gil, Nowon-gu, Seoul (1st floor), 227 m from Sanggye Station Exit 5. It's a famous gamjatang (pork bone stew) spot in Nowon, and I suddenly craved pork bone soup after a long while, so tonight I'm dashing straight to this Sanggye-dong restaurant! 😍😍

There's no dedicated parking, so a nearby public parking lot is a must. Public transport is easy, though: from Sanggye Station Exit 5, cross the crosswalk and take the one-way street by the back gate of Byeoksan Apartments, about a 3-minute walk.

I hear the Sanggye main branch is open 24 hours, and they give you a free drink if you bring a photo of their banner. Do take a look at the menus out front too,

What is Somunnan Gamjatang Sanggye Branch like inside?
Step inside and the clean, tidy feel stands out. Given the menu it's a good place to eat alone, but the tables are wide, so it would also suit a family get-together or a company dinner!

Even in the early evening, takeout customers and delivery orders kept coming in at this Nowon gamjatang favorite!!

Somunnan Gamjatang Sanggye menu and summer dishes
The menu is posted on the wall where you can see it at a glance: gamjatang (large, medium, small), bone braise (ppyeojjim, large and medium), house-made samgyetang (ginseng chicken soup), pork bone soup, pork bone soup (special), spicy sundae soup, regular sundae soup, bean sprout and dried pollack soup, plate sundae, extras, and alcohol and drinks.

There were also perilla oil buckwheat noodles, perfect for this weather, and cold buckwheat noodles (naengmomil) that cool you down to the core. Note that a Naver receipt review event gets you one free bottle of soft drink per table, once :)

Special pork bone soup, cold soba and sundae: what did they cost?
Here's what we ordered at Somunnan Gamjatang Sanggye Branch that day.
- Pork bone soup (special) ₩13,000
- Cold buckwheat noodles ₩10,000
- Plate sundae (Korean blood sausage) ₩12,000
It was hot out, so I tried the pork bone soup together with cold noodles, and the plate sundae I'd been curious about got added too. Order done :)
After ordering, they bring the basic setup first: salt for dipping the sundae, cubed radish kimchi (kkakdugi), fresh kimchi (geotjeori), pickled onions, and the bowl of rice that comes with the pork bone soup.

Special-size pork bone soup with 4 chunks of spine
Ta-da 😍 the special-size pork bone soup arrives first!!

The special pork bone soup at Somunnan has 4 chunks of spine, and they're loaded with meat!!

Even one bone is hard to lift with chopsticks, haha. As you'd expect from a gamjatang specialist, the soup is clean with not a hint of porky smell, and the broth is rich. So good 😍😍

Cold soba to alternate with hot pork bone soup in summer
The cold soba (₩10,000) tasted just like the one you know, and being so chilled it's a perfect summer order alongside. A bowl of cold soba in summer feels like it blows the heat away... haha
One bite of pork bone soup, one bite of cold soba, and you never feel hot and just keep eating!!

Plate of sundae for 12,000 won: how big is the portion?
Wow, look at the amount of sundae!! At ₩12,000 I thought the plate sundae seemed a bit pricey, but they pile it up like a mountain 👍👍

It's chalsundae (sundae made with glutinous rice), so it's chewy and tasty on its own, good with the pickled onions, and when you eat it with the pork bone soup broth it's like spicy sundae soup, a real treat ❤️ There was plenty, but I kept picking at it one piece at a time and ended up finishing almost all of it, our little secret... 😅😂

Is Somunnan Gamjatang Sanggye Branch worth a return visit?
Somunnan Gamjatang Sanggye Branch is famous as a Sanggye-dong gamjatang spot, so even after a long gap it was really good, and besides the food the owner was super friendly, which made the meal even nicer :) Next time I'll go for the gamjatang ❤️ If you're looking for a meal or a gamjatang place in Sanggye-dong, I recommend this Nowon gamjatang favorite, Somunnan Gamjatang Sanggye Branch 🙏
