Yongsan tteokbokki restaurant with a door waitlist pad: Hyeonseonine
In short
Hyeonseonine Yongsan Main Branch (현선이네 용산본점) is a spicy broth tteokbokki (simmered rice cakes) snack restaurant on Hangang-daero 39-gil, near Sinyongsan and Yongsan stations in Seoul. After signing up on the waiting pad at the entrance, the writer ordered the Hyeonseonine combo set with offal included and got broth tteokbokki, chapsundae (glutinous rice blood sausage), mini gimbap (seaweed rice rolls), assorted fritters, long fish cakes and yaki-mandu (fried dumplings) all at once. Verdict: when you can't decide what to order at Hyeonseonine, the combo set sorts it out in one go.

Passing by Yongsan Station and Sinyongsan Station today, I had one of those sudden cravings for Korean snack food — and this is the kind of place you just have to stop at, like a neighborhood mill you can't skip!! Here's my visit to Hyeonseonine Tteokbokki Yongsan Main Branch. It's famous for its spicy tteokbokki, so if you're a bunsik (Korean snack food) lover, this is a must-go -!

How does the wait work? Start with the entrance waiting pad

Hyeonseonine Yongsan Main Branch is such a famous Yongsan hotspot that a wait is basically mandatory during peak meal times or on weekends -! The waiting seats are well set up too! There's a waiting pad at the store entrance where you can register for the line, so the moment you arrive, get your name on the list first — that's the tip ⭐️
The atmosphere inside

Walk in and Hyeonseonine's signature bright yellow and red instantly catch your eye!! Overall clean and pleasant, haha

The space is pretty spacious and comfortable, but since it's such a popular spot it's always buzzing with people!! A cozy, friendly vibe that's perfect for gathering with friends over snack food ➿
What's at the self-serve bar
Once you've grabbed a seat, head over to the neatly arranged self-serve bar on one side of the store to set up ✨ Above all, the heart of this self-serve bar is the pickled radish and fry batter powder!

From plates to spoons, forks, scissors, tongs, napkins, and wet wipes — everything you need for the meal is there for the taking, no need to feel shy about it!!
What's in the Hyeonseonine combo set

✔️Hyeonseonine combo set — this is the menu that solves my decision paralysis in one go!! I ordered the Hyeonseonine combo set! Think of it as the all-in-one menu that brings you everything you'd want from a snack bar 💕
Chapsundae, mini gimbap, assorted fritters (gimmari, squid, sweet potato, vegetable, etc.), and long fish cakes — all the classics of Korean snack food are ready and waiting -! I filmed a video of it too, haha
Broth tteokbokki: broth soaked into wheat rice cakes
✔️Broth tteokbokki — the chewy, soft wheat rice cakes are soaked through with broth!! The mild version tastes like old-school tteokbokki from outside a school, sweet and bursting with savory depth 🔥🔥

The wheat rice cakes are so soft and squishy they jiggle when picked up with chopsticks!! The seasoning soaks all the way into the rice cakes, so every bite bursts with chewiness and savory flavor, haha

It's basically a broth-heavy, wheat-rice-cake style tteokbokki, and on top of that, even the fish cake broth was delicious!! I get why it's such a famous tteokbokki spot -!

The tteokbokki broth is so addictive — sharply spicy yet strangely addictive, the kind of flavor that has you sweating but still reaching for more 👍👍

I kept dunking the fritters and sundae into the broth too!! You can really taste that sweet, rich, nostalgic flavor from the neighborhood stationery-store stalls of childhood 💗
Long fish cakes
✔️Long fish cakes — the perfect way to finish off the bunsik party is with hot fish cake broth!! When you're eating snack food, you've got to have the broth too, haha
The chewy, well-cooked fish cakes paired with a deep, clean broth do a proper job of washing out the greasy or spicy taste in your mouth, haha 🍢🍢🍥
Sundae: intestine included, if you choose

✔️Sundae (blood sausage) — a bunsik combo just isn't complete without it!! You can choose whether to include the intestine when ordering -! I like all the intestines too, so I picked that option, and the portion is huge 👏👏

True to its name, chapsundae, the texture is chewy and clings to your mouth in the best way ✨ There's no pork gaminess or off-smell at all, so even people sensitive to smells can enjoy it without worry!!

In particular, the liver doesn't crumble dry — it's quite moist and nutty!! The lungs are tender, so even dipping them lightly in just salt lets you enjoy their natural clean flavor, haha
Mini gimbap: perfect for cooling down the spice

✔️Mini gimbap — glossy little seaweed rice rolls!! Even with simple fillings, the sesame oil worked through the rice grains fills your mouth with a nutty aroma, pairing perfectly with the spicy tteokbokki, haha

Great for popping one after another when your mouth's on fire. Being mini-sized, they're easy to eat in one bite, and the fillings are surprisingly substantial!!

This gimbap really shines while eating the tteokbokki!!! Right when your mouth starts feeling a bit too spicy, popping one of these mini gimbap in lets the nutty rice grains neutralize the heat completely… 💕
Assorted fritters and yaki-mandu: dip in soy sauce
✔️Assorted fritters — squid, gimmari (fried seaweed roll), vegetables, and more, all fried up with a thin, very crispy batter -!

They must use clean oil, because the batter has a clear, bright yellow color!! The batter isn't thick — it's very thin and crispy, so it crunches when you bite in ➿ So good, haha

Drenching the fritters in tteokbokki broth is the truth, but if you want to enjoy the fritters' own crispiness, I highly recommend dipping them in the separately provided soy sauce instead -!

Dipping the golden-fried yaki-mandu (pan-fried dumplings), fried with the excess oil drained off, into the salty soy sauce — that moment of nutty batter flavor, haha The dumpling skin still has all its crisp texture since it hasn't been soaked in broth yet!!
Cut the plump, chewy fried squid or the glass-noodle-packed gimmari into pieces with scissors and dunk them into the tteokbokki broth!! That familiar taste everyone knows and loves 💓
Even soaked in broth, the fritters keep their signature nuttiness, making for the best pairing…👍👍👍 From start to finish! This was a course that really let you appreciate just how good every single ingredient in the Hyeonseonine combo set is, haha
Who should visit Hyeonseonine Yongsan Main Branch
Hyeonseonine Yongsan Main Branch is the best sweet-and-spicy harmony that bunsik can offer! Strongly recommended for anyone who wants to experience firsthand the reputation of one of Seoul's three great spicy tteokbokki spots, or who wants to enjoy a generous, varied bunsik feast in a retro street-stall kind of atmosphere -! ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
When you can't decide what to get, go with the Hyeonseonine combo set without a second thought!!
