Danyang market bakery, gave up day 1, 30-min wait day 2: Danppang
In short
Danppang Bakery (단빵제빵소) is a bakery near Gugyeong Market in Danyang, Chungbuk, that sells Danyang garlic bread. On a two-day Danyang trip, the writer gave up on the long line on day one, then waited about 30 minutes on day two to buy two 4-flavor sets. The cream cheese garlic bread was the best of the four, and the set taken home became the parents' favorite souvenir. Verdict: at Danppang Bakery, join the line the moment you spot it.

During our 2-day trip to Danyang, I went to Gugyeong Market (구경시장) three times, hahaha.

Gugyeong Market has so much to see and eat that you simply can't escape it, a truly scary place, hahaha. As you get closer to the market, people are carrying Danppang Bakery (단빵제빵소) garlic bread around by the boxful, so I went to check out the bakery famous for Danyang garlic bread.

How long is the wait at Danppang Bakery?
On day two I waited about 30 minutes in line before getting my garlic bread. Danppang Bakery is open 10:30-21:00, with last order at 19:30, and it closes early once ingredients run out.
It's a Danyang favorite where everyone buys one or two boxes, so there were really a lot of people waiting. On the first day the crowd was so big that I thought, let's come tomorrow, but it was crowded the next day too. I recommend just joining the line the moment you find it, hahaha. You know the winding line before you enter the Palace of Versailles? I waited in a line like that, hahaha. Once the bread comes out it gets packed quickly, so I could pick it up after about a 30-minute wait.
Danppang Bakery line tip: pre-pay for dakgangjeong (sweet crispy fried chicken) across the street

While you wait at Danppang Bakery, pay in advance at the popular spot across the street, Danyang Black Garlic Nurungji Dakgangjeong (흑마늘누룽지닭강정, crispy fried chicken glazed with sweet sauce), and then get in line; you can pick up both almost at the same time, haha. When I finished waiting at the bakery and went to get the chicken, the timing was perfect ♥︎ hehe
Danppang Bakery menu, prices and set discounts
- Cream cheese garlic bread ₩4,300
- Sweet potato custard garlic bread ₩4,300
- Black garlic cream cheese garlic bread ₩4,300
- Garlic baguette ₩3,900
- Discount when you buy a set
There are four items in total, and buying a set gets you ₩2,200 to ₩3,500 off. I recommend a gift set: you taste a variety and get the discount. I chose two 4-flavor assortment sets ♥︎
The people in front of me in line had eaten there the day before and were lining up again to buy gifts. Eating the 4-flavor set on the first day and then buying mostly your favorites the next day seemed like a good approach.
Danppang Bakery at Gugyeong Market: my verdict after trying all 4

I tried all four types: cream cheese garlic bread, black garlic cream cheese garlic bread, sweet potato custard garlic bread and garlic baguette. The garlic flavor worked well in all four, but cream cheese garlic bread was my favorite ♥︎ hehe The shop feels lively and the staff were kind. You can also watch the bread being made in real time, which felt like a performance, and waiting was fun.
They carry out boxes stacked so high, and it's amazing, wow (that's not quite the line, haha). I heard some people clapped together as they watched, but the people waiting with me watched quietly. (Quietly, with great attention.)
Why Danppang Bakery stands out in Gugyeong Market

At Gugyeong Market you'll see tasty food everywhere. The one that stands out most is Danppang Bakery.

Walking around or even going into restaurants, I kept seeing people holding Danppang Bakery gift boxes. I was really curious how good it could be that everyone browsing the market buys it, so I'll try whether Danppang Bakery's Danyang garlic bread is worth buying.
A Danyang bakery featured on TV several times

Danppang Bakery was reportedly featured on TV several times, including Live Tonight (생방송 오늘저녁) episodes 2248 and 1778, 6 O'clock My Hometown (6시내고향) episode 7815 and 2TV Morning Information (2TV생생정보) episode 1227. When a place has been on TV, you want to try it once on a trip, right? It's not just me, is it?
What does Danyang garlic bread taste like?

The garlic bread at Danppang Bakery charms with its garlic aroma and sweetness. Koreans love garlic so much, right? And who doesn't love carbs. (Why is garlic carbs, though? Garlic's betrayal. It should be fiber or vitamins,,,)

The outside is crisp and sweet, so it works like a dessert, and it's packed with cream cheese, so it's filling enough to recommend as a light meal! Honestly, with several menu items, deciding what combination to buy is a headache, so I was so glad there's a recommended set ♥︎ hehe
Why Danyang garlic bread makes a great Danyang souvenir

Let me tell you why I recommend Danppang Bakery's Danyang garlic bread as a souvenir. It's a distinctive product made with Danyang garlic, but it's also well packaged, which makes it perfect as a gift.

When you open the package, the four flavors of garlic bread sit prettily inside, like this. When I got home after the trip, it was the souvenir my parents liked best! Mom: "It's so deliciousss, and the price is cheap too!!! You bought it so wellll" That's the item.
Danppang Bakery's 4 garlic breads compared
Cream cheese garlic bread: my top pick

My top pick is Danppang Bakery's cream cheese garlic bread. It was delicious with a subtle garlic aroma, sweetness and the richness of cream cheese. Garlic bread's signature flavor and cream cheese is a combination I'd never thought of, but it works well. If you can't decide what to pick, I'd recommend the cream cheese garlic bread as number one among Danyang garlic breads.
Black garlic cream cheese garlic bread: a stronger garlic flavor

The black garlic cream cheese garlic bread has a somewhat stronger garlic flavor than the cream cheese one. Well-cooked garlic is so good, isn't it? If you want plenty of it, go for the black garlic cream cheese garlic bread. Black garlic and cream cheese blend together for a different charm from the regular cream cheese garlic bread.
Sweet potato custard garlic bread: for those who like it sweet

The sweet potato custard garlic bread contains pieces of sweet potato and mousse, so the sweet potato flavor is strong. It's fairly sweet and filling. I think it suits people who like sweet desserts. It goes well with unsweetened drinks like milk or an americano.
Garlic baguette: more of the crispy part

Danppang Bakery's garlic baguette is full of garlic flavor, crisp and sweet outside, that taste you know, but think of it as having more of the crunchy part than an ordinary garlic baguette. Never a miss ♥︎ Buying the 4-flavor set and sharing with family or friends lets you taste and compare several flavors and find the one that suits you, which sounded fun.
Can you watch the garlic bread being made at Danppang Bakery?
What impressed me at Danppang Bakery was that you can watch the garlic bread being made step by step. Eating tasty bread is great, but being able to see it made felt like watching a performance, so the waiting time wasn't boring ♥︎ The shop atmosphere is nice and the staff are kind and full of passion, which put me in an even better mood. Around Gugyeong Market there were really lots of people holding Danppang Bakery garlic bread. It seems to be a popular snack at Gugyeong Market.
Is Danppang Bakery garlic bread worth buying as a Danyang gift?

On the way home from a trip, you want to give something to the people you love. Garlic bread made with Danyang's specialty garlic makes a great gift ♥︎ I took it as a gift too. (To me, from me.) It's tremendously appealing as a travel souvenir.

Another plus is that Danppang Bakery's garlic bread comes in many kinds, so you can put together a gift to taste. Buying several to try is good, and sharing with family or friends is great too. A snack while traveling Danyang, a souvenir at home, eat and eat and eat ♥︎ hehe
On the way home I wondered, "Ahh,,,, am I doing the right thing?" but my family ate it happily and I felt I was so right to bring it. I'm 100% going to visit again! If you're looking for a good place or souvenir at Gugyeong Market, how about Danppang Bakery, which sells Danyang garlic bread?
