Jeju Korean restaurant with a tteokbokki self-bar: Hwadeogeuro Gan

Hwadeogeuro Gan Godeungeo Bansang Jeju Iho Tewoo Branch is a Korean restaurant serving wood-fired grilled fish on the first floor of the Naedo Music Arcade, right in front of Iho Tewoo Beach in Jeju. A couple came straight from picking up their rental car at Jeju Airport for their first meal of the trip, ordering the grilled mackerel set (13,800 won) and spicy stir-fried pork set (14,800 won) and using the self-bar with tteokbokki (spicy rice cakes), nurungji (scorched rice) and fried eggs. With its own parking lot, Hwadeogeuro Gan is an easy Korean meal for the first or last day of a Jeju trip.

Korean pub near Jeju Airport: first-night daechang stew, Deureomtong

Deureomtong Sotttukkeong Dakdoritang (드럼통솥뚜껑닭도리탕) is a Korean pub on Wonnohyeong-ro in Nohyeong-dong, Jeju City, where dakdoritang (spicy braised chicken stew) simmers in a pot lid set on a drum-barrel table. On the first night of a Jeju trip, the writer and her husband ordered hanwoo daechang gopdoritang (chicken stew with Korean beef large intestine, 22,000 won per person) with bean sprouts and potato, then added fried rice, and even as hearty eaters they couldn't finish it all. Open until 3am, Deureomtong Sotttukkeong Dakdoritang is an easy first-night dinner or late-drinks stop near Jeju Airport.

Seongsan, Jeju lunch course with anchovy cream pork: Nansan-ri

Nansan-ri Restaurant (난산리식당) is a reservation-only course restaurant in Nansan-ri, Seongsan-eup, Seogwipo, Jeju. A married couple on a Jeju trip booked the 38,000 won lunch course and ate through fern butter bread, a caviar egg appetizer, Jeju black pork tenderloin in meljeot (fermented anchovy) cream sauce, refillable chorizo oil pasta and panna cotta. Since they drove, they skipped wine for a non-alcoholic bottle, and came away recommending Nansan-ri Restaurant as an anniversary date course.

Jocheon, Jeju noodle restaurant with post-meal mouthwash: Myeonjumak

Myeonjumak Jeju Main Branch is a gogi-guksu (pork noodle soup) and dombe pork (sliced boiled pork served on a wooden board) restaurant on Beonyeong-ro in Jocheon-eup, Jeju. Stopping in before a walk along Sayeoni Forest Trail, we shared gogi-guksu and bibim guksu with a plate of dombe pork, and found chewy pork with no gamey smell, refillable radish tea at the self-serve bar and a free disposable mouthwash after the meal. Dombe pork is boiled at 9am and noon, so it is worth timing your visit.

Jeju rice cake shop with QR code courier orders: Suragan Tteokbang

Suragan Tteokbang is a shop specializing in omegi-tteok (Jeju glutinous rice cakes) at 41 Noyeon-ro in Jeju-si, close to Jeju Airport. Suragan Tteokbang opens at 8am every day, which made it an easy stop on the way to return a rental car, and courier orders can be submitted by scanning a QR code; a 10-piece gift box costs 11,000 won, 20 pieces cost 22,000 won, and nationwide shipping starts at 27,000 won for 20 pieces. Black sesame and red bean omegi-tteok came gift-wrapped with an ice pack and a storage note, so they were still chewy by the time they reached home.
