Today I want to share a delicious rice cake I found while traveling in Jeju.

Omegi-tteok packed up during a Jeju trip

I've been really into chewy rice cakes lately, so after finishing this Jeju trip, I decided to pack some omegi-tteok (a Jeju specialty glutinous rice cake) to bring home and share with my family.

There are lots of omegi-tteok shops in Jeju, but I went to Suragan Tteokbang (수라간떡방), an omegi-tteok specialty shop near Jeju Airport that was perfect for the last stop of my trip since it's so close to the airport!

Suragan Tteokbang is located at 41 Noyeon-ro, Jeju-si, Jeju, and it's open daily from 08:00 to 18:30. Its biggest advantage is being right on the way to catching a flight.

What other rice cakes are there besides omegi-tteok?

True to its name, 'Suragan Tteokbang' (a royal-kitchen rice cake room), the shop had all kinds of appealing rice cakes beyond just omegi-tteok.

Looking around the store, I saw baekseolgi (white steamed rice cake), red bean siru-tteok, mixed black rice chapssal-tteok, yakgwa (honey cookies), and white cheese seolgi — all looking chewy and savory at a glance. The cheese-filled white cheese seolgi and the nutrient-packed mixed black rice chapssal-tteok looked especially delicious.

Omegi-tteok flavors and what I picked

Suragan Tteokbang's omegi-tteok comes in a wide range of flavors — tangerine, soybean powder, black sesame, red bean, and mixed nuts. This variety is a big strength of the shop; picking which ones to try is half the fun!

  • Tangerine omegi-tteok
  • Soybean powder omegi-tteok
  • Black sesame omegi-tteok
  • Red bean omegi-tteok
  • Mixed nuts omegi-tteok

Out of all the options, I went with black sesame, which I usually like, and the classic red bean omegi-tteok.

A 10-piece gift box of omegi-tteok is ₩11,000, a 20-piece box is ₩22,000, and nationwide courier shipping is ₩27,000 for 20 pieces or ₩35,000 for 30 pieces. Walking into the store, the gift boxes and price signs were laid out clearly and easy to read, with everything from single pieces to various gift set sizes neatly prepared.

They also mentioned that chapssal-tteok varieties like yakbap (sweet rice with nuts), mixed chapssal-tteok, pumpkin injeolmi, and mugwort injeolmi are available both for nationwide courier and in-store pickup — good to know if you love chewy chapssal-tteok!

And one more great tip! The shop is running a review event. Write a review after your visit and they'll throw in 2 extra omegi-tteok — such a thoughtful event, so make sure to join in and grab some extra delicious omegi-tteok!

Ice pack packing and storage instructions

Suragan Tteokbang packs an ice pack into the box, and the storage method for the omegi-tteok is even printed on it. I was a little worried the rice cakes might spoil or lose their shape by the time I got home after traveling, but the owner packed a fresh ice pack and wrapped everything so neatly and nicely that I was very satisfied!

The box also had storage instructions for the omegi-tteok written clearly, which really helped when I got home and wanted to keep enjoying them over time. (Freeze any leftover rice cakes and let them thaw naturally before eating — they stay just as chewy as the first bite!)

How do the black sesame and red bean omegi-tteok taste?

When I actually tried Suragan Tteokbang's omegi-tteok, the rice cake was so sticky and chewy that the texture just melted in my mouth — really excellent!

The black sesame one filled my mouth with a savory, luxurious flavor, while the red bean omegi-tteok had sweet, nutty red beans that you could bite into, keeping the flavor interesting without getting tiring. If you love a chewy texture, this will definitely satisfy you.

The location near Jeju Airport made it a truly ideal spot to pick up omegi-tteok before flying out, and between the chewy taste, the careful packing, and the friendly service, everything about this place was satisfying.
