Why we picked Gungmin Hanwoo House Samseong Station branch for a hanwoo dinner

Gungmin Hanwoo House (국민한우집) Samseong Station branch is near Samseong Station and Coex, and it serves hanwoo grilled over charcoal, so I picked it for a dinner with my husband. We were wondering where to go for a really good dinner lately..and while searching for Samseong Station restaurants, specifically somewhere to eat hanwoo nearby, we ended up here. The Samseong area has lots of offices and plenty of places good for meetups, but the charcoal-grilled hanwoo is what caught my eye.

The exterior already gave off a proper hanwoo restaurant vibe. The name is written big on a red sign that stands out, and in front there was a menu and a notice saying they sell only hanwoo, which made me trust it even more.

Near the entrance there were signs for a certified hanwoo seller and wording about a hanwoo that won the Presidential Award at the national hanwoo competition, which built my confidence in the meat quality. When I go for hanwoo, I think the quality of the meat itself matters most, so seeing "100% domestic" on the origin label raised my expectations.

The location is good too. It's near Samseong Station, so easy to reach, and Coex, the Trade Center and the InterContinental Hotel are all close. It looks good for a work dinner, a company gathering, a date, or a meal with foreign friends, and not only that, apparently lots of celebrities have visited too. If you want hot Samseong Station hanwoo, head to Gungmin Hanwoo House Samseong Station branch!

The restaurant has been running since 2015. It says it handles hanwoo 1++ and 1+ grade beef and offers carefully selected raw cuts to suit your taste. It particularly emphasizes trimming unnecessary fat so the meat comes out clean, so it seemed like a good fit for anyone who wants to eat hanwoo properly.

How the menu at Gungmin Hanwoo House is organized

The menu is split into meal dishes and grill dishes (sets and single cuts). Let's take a look at the menu.

Meal menu at Gungmin Hanwoo House Samseong Station branch

The meal dishes included herbal galbitang (short rib soup), hanwoo bulgogi, hanwoo yukhoe bibimbap (beef tartare rice bowl), hanwoo brisket doenjang stew, Hamhung-style mul naengmyeon (cold noodles in broth), and Hamhung-style yukhoe bibim naengmyeon. There seemed to be plenty to choose from even at lunch, and prices for the meal dishes looked easy on the wallet.

Grill set and single-cut menu at Gungmin Hanwoo House

The grill menu was divided into sets and single cuts. The sets included VIP 300g, Premium Assorted 400g and Domestic Assorted 400g, and the single cuts included shrimp sirloin, snowflake sirloin, chuck flap, outside skirt, tenderloin, special sirloin, flat iron, and whole rib finger meat. Since prices are listed by cut, you can pick just the cuts you want, and for a first visit, trying a variety with an assorted platter looked like a good idea.

The lunch menu is apparently well known too. The patented king galbitang, hanwoo bulgogi served on an old-style bulgogi pan, and hanwoo yukhoe bibimbap with five-color vegetables are said to be popular office-worker lunches. With so many office workers around Samseong Station, it works out as hearty meals at lunch and charcoal-grilled hanwoo in the evening.

What the two of us ordered: Premium Assorted 400g + fried rice + cold noodles

There were two of us, so we ordered the Premium Assorted 400g. It consisted of tenderloin, snowflake sirloin or chuck flap, special sirloin, and special rib finger meat. The 400g is listed as about 2 servings, so it looked just right for two, and I liked that we could try several cuts at once.

Meat alone felt like it wouldn't be enough, so we also ordered the sirloin kkakdugi (cubed radish kimchi) fried rice and Hamhung-style cold noodles. Finishing meat with fried rice and cold noodles is a combo that's hard to get wrong, so I was looking forward to it. With such a varied menu, it looks easy to choose depending on what kind of meal you're after when searching for Samseong Station hanwoo.

What side dishes come at Gungmin Hanwoo House

After we ordered, the basic side dishes came out first: sliced onion, geotjeori (fresh kimchi-style salad), wood ear mushrooms, garlic stems, lettuce geotjeori, and seasoned bean sprouts. For a BBQ place, I like sides that support the flavor of the meat rather than going overboard, and these were just like that.

The sliced onion went well with the meat, and the spicy geotjeori cleaned up the palate between fatty cuts. The pickled items were nice to nibble on in between, and the bean sprouts were an easy side to keep reaching for. When you eat meat, it can get heavy, but the sides were just right, so it felt like an easy-going Samseong Station BBQ place you can drop into comfortably.

Premium Assorted 400g: how did each cut taste?

Premium Assorted 400g served on a wooden stand

The Premium Assorted 400g came neatly arranged by cut on a wooden stand. With tenderloin, snowflake sirloin, special sirloin and special rib finger meat together, it was satisfying to look at already. King oyster mushrooms and chili peppers to grill alongside came too, and the color and marbling of the meat looked great, so I was excited.

Each cut had a different shape and grain, so just looking at them was fun. The thick cuts promised juiciness, and the well-marbled ones looked like they'd taste rich and nutty when grilled. I like trying several cuts of hanwoo at once, so the Premium Assorted lineup suited me.

The moment the meat hit the charcoal, a nutty aroma rose up. I think hanwoo tastes best when it's cooked just right rather than too long, and eating it with a golden-brown surface gave a great texture and you could really taste the juices. The subtle charcoal aroma made the flavor feel richer. So I think it's easily worth recommending to anyone looking for a good beef place in the Daechi area too.

The tenderloin was tender and clean-tasting. It was easy to chew, and even a light dip in salt let the beef flavor come through. The sirloin was richer and nuttier, and being marbled, it melted softly in the mouth, which I loved. The special rib finger meat had a good chew, and my husband especially enjoyed it. Each cut had its own charm, so we never got tired of it.

The king oyster mushrooms and vegetables grilled alongside, and the side dishes, were good too. Adding mushrooms between pieces of meat gave more variety in texture, and lightly grilled over charcoal they tasted clean. Rather than eating only meat the whole time, mixing in mushrooms and sides in between made it feel more balanced.

Does charcoal brazier grilling make the hanwoo taste better?

Gungmin Hanwoo House Samseong Station branch is a place where you grill the meat over a charcoal brazier. They say hanwoo's nutty richness and beefy aroma come out better over charcoal, and when I actually grilled it, a subtle charcoal aroma coated the meat and made the hanwoo flavor stand out more. In that sense, it felt less like a place just to have a meal and more like a Samseong Station BBQ place where you can really enjoy meat.

Sirloin kkakdugi fried rice served in a stone pan

Is the sirloin kkakdugi fried rice worth ordering?

The sirloin kkakdugi fried rice had a recommended mark on the menu, and when I ordered it after eating a fair amount of meat, I was glad I did. It came in a stone pan, with kkakdugi, sirloin, seaweed flakes, sesame and scallions all blended together.

On the first bite, the kkakdugi still had its crunch, and the sirloin added a nutty flavor. The fried rice wasn't too spicy or harsh, and it had a good savory depth, so I kept going back for more. It's a great pick for anyone who wants to finish a meat meal with a hearty rice dish.

The bits that stuck lightly to the bottom of the stone pan were delicious too. They turned into a crisp, nutty, nurungji-like (scorched rice) texture, so I could enjoy it right to the end. Rather than stopping at the meat, adding the sirloin kkakdugi fried rice made the meal feel far more complete. I thought it's a good place for people looking for Samseong Station hanwoo to be satisfied right through to the rice.

Hamhung-style mul naengmyeon in a brass bowl

How is it to finish with Hamhung-style mul naengmyeon?

The Hamhung-style mul naengmyeon is a clean-tasting style, so it was a good finisher after meat. My husband and I are both big eaters..haha we couldn't stop there, so we finished off with a refreshing bowl of Hamhung-style cold noodles. After meat, cold noodles naturally come to mind, right? It came in a brass bowl, which looked cool and refreshing, and it was neatly topped with cucumber, pear, egg strips and sesame.

The broth was clean and cold. It felt like it reset my mouth after the meat, and the noodles were thin and springy, so not heavy. It wasn't an overly sweet or harsh naengmyeon, so it went well alongside the meat too. We shared it, and it gave a different kind of tidy finish from the fried rice.

Eating hanwoo from the Premium Assorted, filling up with the sirloin kkakdugi fried rice, then finishing with the Hamhung-style cold noodles made for a great flow to the whole meal. Getting meat, rice and naengmyeon all in one was a satisfying dinner. I think it suits people who care about the meal dishes and not just the meat when looking for a Samseong Station BBQ place.

Overall, how was Gungmin Hanwoo House Samseong Station branch?

True to its name, Gungmin Hanwoo House Samseong Station branch was satisfying overall, from the proper hanwoo-specialist menu and basic sides to the charcoal-grill method. The Premium Assorted 400g was a good amount for two, and I liked being able to try several cuts. The meat quality was good, and grilling over charcoal let us really taste hanwoo's signature nuttiness at this Samseong Station hanwoo spot.

The sirloin kkakdugi fried rice and Hamhung-style cold noodles were satisfying too. It isn't a meal that ends with just meat; being able to enjoy the meal dishes fully was a plus. I recommend it to anyone looking for hanwoo or a BBQ place at Samseong Station, or a good beef place near Daechi-dong!
