Suwon fish restaurant, mackerel sashimi set for 2: Godeungeo

I was craving grilled mackerel, so I went to Godeungeo Myeongpumi Doeda Suwon Branch (고등어명품이되다 수원점) in Gwonseon-gu, Suwon. My one-line review: "The mackerel is big and tender." The set menus have lots of variety and tasted great, so it gets ★5 from me.

The restaurant is on Seobu-ro in Gwonseon-gu, near Gwonseon Police Station (Seobu Police Station) and Gwonseon-gu Office. Even on a weekday it was packed with people! Let me show you the menu first.

What comes with the Myeongpum set?

The Myeongpum set brings gochujang bulgogi, mackerel sashimi and grilled mackerel all at once. The side dishes included seaweed soup, japchae (glass noodle stir-fry), deodeok (bellflower root, I think?) salad, cucumber salad and more. The deodeok salad and the radish were delicious. Good, good!

How big is the Myeongpum set for 2?

There was so much food that the two of us couldn't finish it. After the gochujang bulgogi, the mains, grilled mackerel and mackerel sashimi, came out quickly, and the grilled mackerel was seriously huge, so we left some and took it home. It tasted good too, and with the sashimi and bulgogi on top, the portion was really big.

How was the grilled mackerel?

The grilled mackerel was meaty and tender, with no fishy smell. Can you see how much flesh there is? It was easy to pick out the bones, and it was really delicious. Highly recommended!

We ate the gochujang bulgogi wrapped in lettuce like this, and we also got extra side dishes from the self-serve bar.

How clean is Godeungeo Myeongpumi Doeda Suwon Branch?

The place felt clean and tidy overall; for example, the soy sauce dishes were disposable. Even the soy sauce and wasabi..! And good food needs a drink..! So we ordered Chungha.

Mackerel sashimi with lemon, and sungnyung to finish

Squeezing lemon over the mackerel sashimi made it fresh and tasty. As we neared the end of the meal, we finished with sungnyung (scorched-rice tea). The self-serve bar has both sikhye and sungnyung.

You can eat as many side dishes as you like. My top picks were the radish and the deodeok!

The live mackerel tank inside the restaurant

Inside the restaurant there's a mackerel tank (?), and there were really a lot of mackerel, looking very fresh. There was also a fish that looked like flounder, or maybe a similar flatfish? It wasn't on the menu, so I'm not sure what it was.

Is the dessert coffee free?

Yes, the dessert coffee was free. We wrapped up with the leftover mackerel packed to go and a coffee. These days some restaurants charge for dessert coffee, but here it was free!

Waiting list and the kitchen's grill oven

There's a Catch Table machine at the entrance for waiting, and the kitchen has what looks like an oven for grilling the mackerel (it rotates automatically).
