Bultina Kkomak Jjamppong Dongtan Namgwangjang Branch is a Chinese restaurant specializing in cockle jjamppong (spicy seafood noodle soup) on Nojak-ro in Dongtan, Hwaseong, Gyeonggi. On a chilly day, two people went on a friend's recommendation and ordered level 1 cockle jjamppong, cockle jjamppong rice and ₩6,000 fried dumplings; the bowls were loaded with cockles and scallops, and the broth was full of smoky wok flavor. Verdict: Bultina Kkomak Jjamppong Dongtan Namgwangjang Branch is a good Dongtan jjamppong spot for a cockle-packed bowl with great-value dumplings on the side.

Post-hike tripe BBQ and draft beer in Gwanggyo, Suwon: Sekwang

Sekwang Yangdaechang Suwon Gwanggyo (세광양대창 수원광교점) is a retro charcoal-grilled beef tripe and intestine BBQ restaurant a 5-minute walk from Gwanggyojungang Station in Suwon. After hiking Gwanggyosan, the writer ordered the mixed grill for 2 with daechang (large intestine), makchang and teugyang (premium tripe), plus a countryside-style Korean beef doenjang stew, cheese tripe fried rice and draft beer, and found it easy because staff grilled everything from start to finish. At Sekwang Yangdaechang Suwon Gwanggyo, the chewy, crisp-textured teugyang is the one not to miss.

Jeju pub in Yeon-dong for crab and bacon cheese potato pancake: Jumo

Jumo (주모) is a Korean pub on Sin-daero 20-gil in Yeon-dong, Jeju City, close to Jeju Airport and handy for the first or last night of a trip. With the film The Classic playing on a projector, the writer drank Neulinmaeul makgeolli with added honeycomb and ate grilled blue crab with crab-shell fried rice, a makpuccino from the Naver Reservation perk and a bacon cheese potato pancake. Verdict: Jumo's grilled crab, packed with crab meat, is reason enough on its own to come back.

Dongtan North Plaza hotpot, red broth sold out: Lao Chongqing Hotpot

Lao Chongqing Hotpot (라오충칭훠궈) is a hotpot restaurant in the Paragon building at Dongtan North Plaza (Bansong-dong), Hwaseong, Gyeonggi. On a weekday visit the spicy red broth was sold out, so the order was half tomato broth and half beef bone broth, with pork neck, mixed vegetables and a sesame-sauce-based combo from the sauce bar. Even without the red broth, Lao Chongqing Hotpot's soups and the freshness of its meat and vegetables beat expectations.

Suwon Station date bar for DIY beef tartare sushi: Yukhoe Dokjon

The writer ordered the live octopus hanwoo yukhoe for two (₩34,000) and added hanwoo sushi, ate only the beef sashimi off the hanwoo sushi, then topped the leftover rice with yukhoe to make yukhoe sushi. With soft, chilled hanwoo yukhoe and a cozy room, Yukhoe Dokjon is a good pick for a date-night drink near Suwon Station.

Forest Jeongbang is an ocean-view café near Jeongbang Falls in Seogwipo, Jeju, where the second-floor and outdoor seats look out to Seopseom, a distant island designated a Natural Monument. On a cloudy day the writer had the signature Jeongbang Falls latte, an iced americano and a hazelnut chocolate cake with crunchy peanuts, and took photos with the Kitty and Pikachu figures at the Forest Jeongbang entrance. Forest Jeongbang is a good Seogwipo café for a break alongside Jeongbang Falls and the Seogwipo cruise.

Dongtan chicken pub for chili mayo and summer draft beer: Fix Chicken

Fix Chicken Dongtan Central Park Branch is a fried chicken restaurant in Bansong-dong, Dongtan (Hwaseong), near Central Park, with a spacious dining room and a large screen in the middle. On a hot summer weekday evening, two friends shared a half-and-half of boneless Fix Chicken and chili mayo with draft beer. The boneless chicken was crispy outside and juicy inside, and the mildly spicy chili mayo sauce never got tiring. Fix Chicken Dongtan Central Park Branch is an easy recommendation for chicken and beer, work dinners or dates.

Suwon café where you pour your own Americano: apple yuzu ade at Tteum

Tteum Café by Oneplay Suwon Station is a café and furniture shop on Sehwa-ro 154beon-gil in Gwonseon-gu, Suwon, Gyeonggi, set up for proper hand-drip and brewed coffee. The Americano arrives in a separate carafe so you pour only as much as you want to drink, the apple yuzu ade is not sweet at all and tastes bright and fresh, and the ice cream croffle is made to order. Quiet, with plenty of space between seats, Tteum Café is an easy spot to chat and browse the furniture at the same time.
