Post-hike tripe BBQ and draft beer in Gwanggyo, Suwon: Sekwang
In short
Sekwang Yangdaechang Suwon Gwanggyo (세광양대창 수원광교점) is a retro charcoal-grilled beef tripe and intestine BBQ restaurant a 5-minute walk from Gwanggyojungang Station in Suwon. After hiking Gwanggyosan, the writer ordered the mixed grill for 2 with daechang (large intestine), makchang and teugyang (premium tripe), plus a countryside-style Korean beef doenjang stew, cheese tripe fried rice and draft beer, and found it easy because staff grilled everything from start to finish. At Sekwang Yangdaechang Suwon Gwanggyo, the chewy, crisp-textured teugyang is the one not to miss.

Why did we go to Sekwang Yangdaechang Suwon Gwanggyo after hiking Gwanggyosan?
Sekwang Yangdaechang Suwon Gwanggyo (세광양대창 수원광교점) is a charcoal-grilled beef intestine BBQ restaurant on the first floor of W Tower, near Gwanggyojungang Station. Last time, on the way down from a hike up Gwanggyosan, I was craving draft beer so badly~ I searched for places nearby and found Sekwang Yangdaechang, where the charcoal-grilled food looked special from the first photo, so we went straight there.

What is the atmosphere like at Sekwang Yangdaechang Suwon Gwanggyo?
The inside has seriously strong retro vibes, like walking onto a movie set. Apparently, to get the interior of that era right, a film art team actually came to the restaurant and recreated the traces of passing years with extreme realism? 😮

What is on the menu at Sekwang Yangdaechang?
The signature dishes are the mixed beef intestine grill (yangdaechang modeumgui) and garlic short rib meat, and there were plenty of hearty options besides, like fried rice, cold noodles, udon and doenjang (soybean paste) stew. We ordered the mixed grill for 2, which lets you try daechang (large intestine), makchang (abomasum) and teugyang (premium tripe) all at once~

Banchan: cucumber salad and icy muk-sabal
The side dishes (banchan) feel like home cooking too~ That cucumber salad in particular is so good!!! Spicy, salty and nutty, yet crunchy. A real treat 👍

They also bring out a cold muk-sabal (acorn jelly in chilled broth), and the portion of jelly was generous!! It was so hot that day that I couldn't stop drinking the broth. Who can resist icy broth, right?

It comes with a spicy red sauce you can only get at Sekwang Yangdaechang, plus gochuji (pickled chili peppers). Eating the meat with those two was insanely good..

What does the mixed grill for 2 look like?
The mixed grill for 2 at Sekwang Yangdaechang comes with daechang, makchang and teugyang, grilled over charcoal for you. Here comes the mixed grill for 2!! If you want to try all of daechang, makchang and teugyang, I recommend ordering the mixed set like we did.
It's grilled over charcoal, so how could it possibly not taste good!?? I heard the marinade is aged for 48 hours with golden kiwi, which removes gamey smells and boosts the savory flavor!!

Side dish pick: countryside-style Korean beef doenjang stew
This is the countryside-style Korean beef doenjang stew (sigolijip hanu doenjang-jjigae) we ordered as a side. It's packed with tofu, Korean beef and vegetables, and the broth is rich, so mixed with rice it was a total rice thief. You really have to try this one!!!

Do you have to grill the meat yourself at Sekwang Yangdaechang?
No, the staff at Sekwang Yangdaechang Suwon Gwanggyo grill everything from start to finish, which makes it super convenient~ 👍

The key point 🔥⭐️ is that partway through grilling they toss the meat in the marinade once more. The seasoning soaks in better and it's sooo good ㅠㅠㅠㅠ

They bring rice cakes (tteok) first, and dipped in the spicy sauce I wondered if I should order more rice cakes, haha

Which was best: daechang, makchang or teugyang?
The mixed grill is truly delicious dipped in the sauce and eaten with pickled cheongyang chili peppers +_+ I used to think daechang was a bit greasy, but eaten this way it wasn't greasy at all, just nutty.

The makchang was chewy and the daechang was nutty and tasty, but teugyang is the real winner⭐️ Not tough at all, with a texture that's chewy yet kind of crunchy..? Anyway, that kind of feeling, and it was exactly my taste.

And a gulp of draft beer in between~

How is the cheese tripe fried rice at Sekwang Yangdaechang?
We tried the cheese tripe fried rice (chijeu-yang bokkeumbap) too. It's a bit pricey, but it comes loaded with cheese and the portion is generous to match!

Scoop it up and wrap it in gim (seaweed): nutty, salty and spicy, so good, haha. I was already stuffed but scraped the bottom of the pan clean, our little secret 😉

Ice cream for dessert too, a perfect finish~
Is Sekwang Yangdaechang Suwon Gwanggyo worth visiting?
Sekwang Yangdaechang Suwon Gwanggyo is a 5-minute walk from Gwanggyojungang Station, so it's easy to reach, and the proper retro atmosphere felt warm and comfortable! The charcoal-grilled daechang, makchang and teugyang weren't tough at all, and the spicy marinade is insanely savory, so definitely give it a try 🐽
