I definitely wasn't hungry since I'd eaten a lot of snacks, and I had no plans to eat much, but the moment I caught the smell of the chicken stew, my mind completely changed.

Chicken stew simmering away, bubbling — the seasoning is exactly right to eat with rice! The chicken was so well seasoned that once I pulled the meat off and put it over rice, my hand kept going back for more.

I told myself I'd "just have a little" of the chicken, vegetables, glass noodles, potato dumplings and mushrooms inside, but before I knew it my chopsticks just kept moving. 😆

What does the pollack roe rice taste like?

I ordered the pollack roe rice too, drizzled it with sesame oil and mixed it up — it's tasty on its own thanks to the salty umami of the roe,

and it also went really well eaten alongside the chicken stew.

Drizzle on some sesame oil, mix it up, and add just a little of the chicken stew sauce — it wasn't too strong but had that savory umami kick, and it went really well together.

Eating it together with the chicken stew brought out yet another kind of appeal.

In the end, all that talk of not having an appetite went out the window, and I walked out having cleaned my bowl completely. 😂

Dongyang Baekban actually wasn't a restaurant I'd planned to visit from the start on this Gyeongju trip. I went in thinking I'd just have a spoonful or two since I had no appetite, but the smell of the Sumi chicken stew pulled me in, and the result? Chicken stew + gondeure rice + pollack roe rice, all cleaned up!
