Open 24 hours, so drop in whenever

The restaurant runs 24 hours, so you can have Daeyeon-dong gukbap (rice soup) at dawn or late at night. On the days when you're desperately craving a bowl, I can't think of a more reassuring choice than a place that never closes.

Being able to stop by any time for a hearty meal, dawn or late night, is a big plus. Even on a weekend afternoon it was packed with customers, so you could really feel how popular it is.

What are the atmosphere and the self-bar like?

The dining room is bright and clean, without the heavy smell you often get in gukbap restaurants. The interior is really clean and cheerful, and I was happy with it the moment I walked in.

The big open windows give it an airy feel, and thanks to the bright mood, eating alone felt completely comfortable.

With none of that heavy gukbap-house smell, it felt very hygienic, and the self-bar was neat and well organized too.

Wet wipes and the basic side dishes were lined up tidily, so I could help myself whenever I needed. You can also grab noodles freely from the self-bar, which was really convenient.

The tables are spaced fairly well apart, so you can enjoy your meal comfortably without worrying about the next table.

Daeyeon-dong's signature pork soup: how does it taste, and what does it cost?

The signature pork soup (dwaeji gukbap) is ₩9,500, and the three of us ordered three bowls that day.

Even among Daeyeon-dong gukbap places, it's good value, so the price was easy on all three of us.

With eating-out prices being such a burden these days, a kind price like this is really welcome.

The meat and the broth

What impressed me most was the earthenware bowl packed with meat and the rich broth simmered for 24 hours.

The tender boiled meat had a good balance of fat and lean, so I never got tired of it, even bite after bite.

Every spoonful sent up a gentle, savory aroma that naturally whetted my appetite.

Seasoning with chives, salted shrimp and dadaegi

The broth was clean with no gamey smell, and adjusting the seasoning with chives and salted shrimp (saeujeot) brought out an even deeper flavor.

I loosened a little dadaegi (spicy seasoning paste) into the soup for a spicy kick, and it was a perfectly good hangover food too.

Kimchi, kkakdugi, onion and cheongyang chili

The kimchi and kkakdugi (cubed radish kimchi) served as side dishes were nicely fermented, and they went wonderfully with the pork soup.

The crunchy kkakdugi did a great job of cutting through the richness.

Adding onion and cheongyang chili (hot green chili) on the side brought out even more of the soup's flavor.

Unlimited noodles and rice, plus welcome makgeolli

Another big plus: the somyeon noodles and steamed rice are unlimited refills.

True to a Daeyeon-dong gukbap house, the generosity showed, and all three of us had a hearty, full meal.

Adding noodles and eating them in the broth had a different charm of its own. I thought it was a really welcome perk for hungry students, too.

They even give you a free glass of welcome makgeolli (Korean rice wine), and it paired really well with the gukbap.

A glass of clean, sweet makgeolli wrapped up the hearty meal nicely.

A spoonful of gukbap followed by a sip of makgeolli made the whole meal even more satisfying.
