Crab and mackerel pot rice shared with kids in Cheongju: Sorori Sotbap
In short
Sorori Sotbap Culture Factory Branch is a pot rice (sotbap) restaurant on the first floor of the Cheongju Culture Factory (문화제조창), a former tobacco plant turned cultural complex. After walking through a wine festival, the writer shared three bowls with the kids — short rib pot rice 16,000 won, crab pot rice 14,000 won and mackerel pot rice 13,000 won — and found the crab free of any fishy smell and the mackerel twice as savory with lemon and pickled ginger. Finished with butter and seaweed, Sorori Sotbap made for a tidy, filling family meal.

Sorori Sotbap on the first floor of the Cheongju Culture Factory
A fun Cheongju trip, a great pot rice spot in Cheongju. While looking for a place to eat in Cheongju, I ended up at Sorori Sotbap Culture Factory Branch! I was curious what the 'Culture Factory' meant — turns out it's a former tobacco factory reborn as a cultural space.
After parking, I walked into the building and was amazed at how much there was to see and enjoy! Free parking on weekends, by the way!

There happened to be a wine festival going on too, so I looked around and let the kids have some fun before heading in for the real reason — delicious pot rice at Sorori Sotbap.

Fitting for a pot rice restaurant, sacks of rice greet you at the entrance. The retro-styled interior definitely caught my eye — old and modern styles coexist, making it a clean yet nostalgic place worth visiting for the interior alone.
Was there a wait at Sorori Sotbap?
There's a waiting area in front of the store. Luckily we arrived a bit after the peak mealtime so we got in without waiting, but by the time we left, the waiting line was long.

There's an outdoor menu board too, which is handy for deciding what to order while you wait.
Inside the Sorori Sotbap Culture Factory branch
Walking in, I saw stacked rice sacks, an old-school turntable and record collection straight out of the past, a phone book you've probably only heard of, glass cups of Maecol soda, digestive tonic bottles, and even a wall clock like the one at my grandmother's house. Total nostalgia — suddenly I was on a trip down memory lane.
A big window frames a refreshing view with green grass outside, putting your mind at ease, and the open kitchen lets you watch your pot rice being made as you eat.
The cozy interior has plenty of tables, so guests probably don't have to wait long for a seat. Since a lot of families come here to eat, baby chairs are well stocked too.
Side dishes, plus seaweed and butter for the rice
The basic sides that came out were salted squid, pickled chili peppers, diced radish kimchi, seaweed, butter, and soup broth. Seaweed and butter, huh... I figured there must be a right way to eat this combo.

There it is! Mix everything thoroughly down to the bottom of the pot with butter or soy sauce and furikake, then wrap it in seaweed. I figured butter rice would taste amazing, and it really did.

The menu features a variety of pot rice dishes like short rib pot rice and mackerel pot rice, plus gimbap (seaweed rice roll).
- Short rib pot rice ₩16,000
- Mackerel pot rice ₩13,000
- Crab pot rice ₩14,000
This is what we ordered. A great pot rice spot in Cheongju — the menu is seriously hot right now!

Waiting time... a lesson in patience.
Short rib pot rice, 16,000 won: big, tender pieces of beef
Short rib pot rice — you have to try this. The short rib is cut into hearty chunks and the meat is huge and tender. It was well marinated, juicy, and there was so much of it.
Don't forget to scrape up the crispy rice stuck at the bottom of the pot and mix it in. The pot is very hot, so be careful — my son accidentally put his mouth right up to it and got a little burned... my heart broke a little.

Thick short rib, and biting into it, that rich beefy flavor was so good. I scraped all the way to the bottom and added a spoon of butter. Wow... incredible. It's already savory without it, but the butter doubles the flavor. It goes great with the soup broth too. This short rib pot rice sold out pretty quickly — my number one pick!
Crab pot rice, 14,000 won: sweet crab with no fishy smell
Visually, this one wins first place. A crab shell rests gently on top of the rice bowl.

The thick sauce tastes exactly like real crab. Mixed with the rice, it's a perfect crab bowl with zero fishy taste.

Cute little bits of crab meat peeking out, texture and all. Rice mixed inside the crab shell has an unbelievable savoriness. Plump shrimp meat too, which we munched on happily. Add butter and the savory flavor doubles.
Mackerel pot rice, 13,000 won: an easy fish dish for kids
This is the mackerel pot rice. I ordered it thinking our kids needed to eat some fish — we've had too much meat, right?

Lemon and ginger to tame any fishy taste.

Two thick pieces of mackerel. Importantly, not fishy at all — just savory flavor. Still, eating it with lemon and pickled ginger doubled the umami!

The best way to eat it! Put a little butter-mixed rice on a sheet of seaweed and pop it in your mouth in one bite. Mmm~~ so good.
Any side dish running low, just help yourself from the self-serve station. The salted squid was so good.

A one-of-a-kind restaurant — welcome, have you ever had pot rice like this before?

Seriously, be careful. It's hot, it's hot — always portion it out before eating.
Is Sorori Sotbap worth it? A tidy, filling family meal
Freshly cooked, piping hot pot rice with the rice and ingredients visible at a glance made the meal feel satisfying just to look at, and scraping up the crispy bits stuck to the pot was its own fun. On days when you're craving warm rice, this hot pot rice spot — Sorori Sotbap Culture Factory Branch, a great pot rice restaurant in Cheongju — is a good place to go for a tidy, filling meal. Fun food, fun sightseeing, a genuinely enjoyable visit.
