Where is Upper and Under, and what kind of café is it?

Upper and Under (어퍼앤언더) sits between Gangnam Station and Sinnonhyeon Station, and it's actually closer to Sinnonhyeon Station! Around Gangnam Station there are tons of people.. and not as many pretty cafés as you'd think, but Upper and Under runs from basement 1 all the way up to floor 2, so there's plenty of seating, and the terrace gives it such a nice vibe 🤍 Most of all, the coffee and the bakery items are delicious..

Madeleines, canelés and financiers lined up by the window. Pretty AND tasty. Upper and Under is famous as a top spot for baked sweets, pies and cake desserts 👏🏻

Upper and Under floor layout and where to order

At Upper and Under you order on floor 1, up the stairs. The back side of Gangnam is on a slope, so when you climb the stairs you're on floor 1! Basement 1 honestly feels like it isn't a basement at all, it feels like floor 1, and floor 1 feels like floor 2.

What baked goods does Upper and Under sell?

Go up to floor 1 at Upper and Under and you can see the bakery items at a glance: pies, canelés, financiers, madeleines 🤍 They're so pretty, right?.. 🤍

• 🧁 Pies: chocolate banana, chodang corn (sweet corn)
• 🧁 Canelés: Earl Grey, salted caramel, matcha, double vanilla, vanilla
• 🧁 Financiers: pistachio, hwangchijeu (golden cheese), salted chocolate, hojicha pecan, plain (not clearly visible in the photo, but there was also a Ppoppo hwangchijeu financier)
• 🧁 Madeleines: chodang corn, lemon

The double vanilla canelé looked the best of all! Why ask, just go double!!!

Square cakes at Upper and Under

What Upper and Under is really known for is these square cakes 🤍 Fine, I admit it's a dessert hotspot.. The square cakes were pistachio raspberry, Anjou (angjukkanru), mango, tiramisu and lemon.

Isn't the color of the Anjou cake so pretty 🥹 The cream looked so fluffy, and I couldn't walk past my beloved tiramisu.

Which cream coffees does Upper and Under serve?

Upper and Under is famous for its cream coffees, and there's a huge variety. There's Einspänner (coffee topped with cream), salted caramel, pistachio, matcha cream oat, matcha pistachio and coconut matcha. I ordered the Einspänner as the classic cream coffee, and as a total latte addict I picked the flat white 🤍

When I went up to floor 2 at Upper and Under, the floor-to-ceiling windows open onto a terrace, and I loved it.

Floor 2 is almost like floor 3, so the view from the window has its own charm.

How do the flat white and Einspänner taste?

Flat white, 6,800 won

The flat white at Upper and Under is ₩6,800. A regular latte goes watery as time passes, so if you want a slightly stronger latte, try the flat white 🤍

Einspänner, 8,000 won

The Einspänner at Upper and Under is ₩8,000, and there's a reason it's a cream coffee hotspot. It's seriously good, so please order it.. Usually with an Einspänner the cream sits only on top and the coffee underneath is too bitter, so I rarely ordered one, but the moment I took a sip, that rich cream flavor spread through the whole cup 🤍 Delicious!!!

How were the tiramisu and double vanilla canelé?

The tiramisu at Upper and Under is ₩8,500, and the double vanilla canelé is ₩4,500.

A tiramisu loaded with cream!! It isn't one of those heavy-espresso tiramisus, so I could happily scoop it up even in the evening without it feeling heavy 😀

The double vanilla canelé is the ultimate crisp-outside, moist-inside treat.. Honestly it was hard to cut, so I wondered, is it hard..? but the inside is super moist!!!! The outside is really crunchy, so the texture was amazing!! You can see the vanilla bean specks inside too, right?

Upper and Under's basement floor, bright as a ground floor
