On the Rail is an outdoor bakery café beside the train tracks on Imjingak-ro in Munsan-eup, Paju. After the Heyri Modern History Museum and lunch at Cheonje Guksu, the visit at On the Rail meant an Americano and green tea latte with blueberry cake, salt bread and an Anpanman cookie, while the kids ran around the outdoor lawn and the rails for ages. With baby chairs and wide outdoor seating, On the Rail slotted easily into a Paju day trip with a 20–25 month old, paired with Odusan Unification Observatory.

Paju ssambap restaurant for a day-trip dinner: Simhaksan Deulkkot

Simhaksan Deulkkot Ssambap is a ssambap (rice-and-wrap greens) Korean set-menu restaurant on Dolgoji-gil in Paju, Gyeonggi. As the last stop on a Paju day trip through Heyri Art Village, Cheonje Guksu, On The Rail and Odusan Unification Observatory, our family ordered the deul-jeongsik set at 20,000 won per person and the kkot-jeongsik set at 26,000 won per person: pumpkin porridge, stone-pot rice, pork and squid stir-fry, grilled mackerel and a self-serve wrap-greens bar. Both the kids and my niece cleared their plates, making Simhaksan Deulkkot Ssambap an easy, crowd-pleasing Korean dinner to close the day.

Museum-day lunch at Cheonje Guksu, a Paju Tanhyeon noodle restaurant

Cheonje Guksu is a noodle and suyuk (boiled pork) restaurant on Saeori-ro in Tanhyeon, Paju, a 5-minute drive from Heyri Village. After seeing the Heyri modern history museum with her sister and two children, the writer ordered janchi guksu (warm banquet noodles), bibim guksu (spicy mixed noodles), urong gangdoenjang bap (mudsnail soybean paste rice) and suyuk, and the pork was good enough to order a second plate. The urong gangdoenjang bap was her favorite, and with dishes running ₩7,000 to the low ₩10,000s, Cheonje Guksu is an easy lunch stop with kids.
