Paju café with blueberry cake and green tea latte: On the Rail

Why On the Rail went into our Paju day-trip plan

The Paju day trip was planned as: Heyri Village's Museum of Modern and Contemporary History → lunch at Cheonje Guksu → café On the Rail → Odusan Unification Observatory → dinner at Simhaksan Deulkkot Ssambap. After the museum and a delicious lunch at Cheonje Guksu, we headed to On the Rail café.

It's a café we stopped at on the way to Odusan Unification Observatory in Paju, and the kids loved it 😍

On the Rail location in Munsan-eup and opening hours

25 Imjingang-ro, Munsan-eup, Paju-si — On the Rail. Open daily 11:00 to 2:00 the next day (seems to mean it runs until 2am). Cross the train tracks and you'll find this Imjingak-area café, On the Rail 💙

Americano, green tea latte and blueberry cake at On the Rail

After lunch, my sister and I raced over to On the Rail because we needed caffeine and a sugar fix. Yuni and my niece fell asleep on the way — Yuni woke up partway through, but my niece got a nice long nap in 💙 We ordered an Americano and a green tea latte!

Also got salt bread and an Anpanman cookie for the kids! The cookie flavor was amazing ❤

Yuni stuck right to her aunt haha. My niece and Yuni always love their aunt. What is it about her? 👀

Since she wasn't coming to me and stuck to her aunt instead, I got to enjoy my green tea latte in peace haha.

What bread and desserts On the Rail has

Let's look at On the Rail's desserts. Sangtu gwaja (twisted candy cookies) — I ate a lot of these as a kid ❤ Delicious with milk.

The alligator cracker is meant to be eaten for its crunchy texture haha. Pretty big too 💚

Several kinds of cookies too! Yuni nibbled away at the Anpanman cookie 💙

Long cream breads that grown-ups will love 😋 I think there were brownie, mocha, and cream flavors.

The mugwort rice cake salt bread I'd been wanting to try 💚💚

Garlic mont blanc — inside I bet it's full of that moist, garlic-bread-like flavor 💙

A long sausage bread good enough to eat instead of a meal. But everything here is big and generously portioned 💛

Basil tomato cheese bread. You know these are secretly delicious!

Ah, so this is the salt bread 😆 The one above must be a different kind.

Ang-butter (red bean and butter bread) packed full of butter and red bean.

Green onion cheese toast! The green onion and savory aroma hit hard. I wanted to make this at home, but On the Rail's version looks better.

There's also butter bars, which I used to eat a lot of.

Layered cakes too — Oreo, carrot, tiramisu! I had the blueberry cake, and the balance of moderate sweetness and soft sponge was great 💘

A croissant loaded with fruit and cream that you want to bite into all at once 😋😋

There are also shell cookies you can take home!

Is On the Rail okay with kids? Seating and baby chairs

The indoor seats are nice, but the outdoor area is spacious too, and the coffee and drink prices are reasonable — a lot of places charge over ₩9,000 these days, so...

The interior is pretty, right? The teddy bear doll is huge.

There are baby chairs, so it's good to bring a baby along. We ended up going outside to run around anyway, but with the floor-to-ceiling windows, it'd be nice even on a rainy day 💙🤍

A take-out corner where you can warm your bread. There's a microwave to heat it up.

Even after looking around inside On the Rail, Yuni was still clinging to her aunt haha. My youngest niece was still napping. Yuni didn't get a nap, but my niece did, so I'd call it a fairly successful Paju course... haha

My youngest niece woke up in the middle and joined for photos. Aren't you two just too cute!?

The train-track photo zone and the outdoor lawn to run on

Once we stepped outside, the train tracks were still preserved as-is — a total photo zone 💘💘

We moved to the outdoor tables and gave the kids some snacks too 👶🏻👶🏻

Even just some pebbles are fun at this age haha. Moms of 20–25 month olds, let them loose here and enjoy a coffee.

The photos came out so pretty, like we'd gone on a real photo shoot, and the kids had a blast running around for a long time *^^* Now let's head to Odusan Unification Observatory, which is close to the café!!

Odusan Unification Observatory, a short drive from On the Rail

369 Pilseung-ro, Tanhyeon-myeon, Paju-si — Odusan Unification Observatory. Closed every Monday, open 9:30–17:30. ✔ Free admission, free telescopes, free parking.

Not far from On the Rail café, we arrived at Odusan Unification Observatory in Paju. Free to visit, and the basement floor is packed with play spaces for kids 💙

There's a stairway up to a sort of secret base(?), and spots below to hide in too.

They also screen animations, though Yuni wasn't that into it. She prefers playing with toys, running around, reading books, and drawing 💞

My niece got a good nap in too, and giggled away bouncing on the whale ride haha

The space wasn't huge, but the kids loved it so much!

This turned out to be the same magnet toy as Magformers — I'd been debating selling it on Danggeun (a secondhand app) before. Figured I'd try assembling it once haha.

Yuni's favorite — drawing time! Maybe I should print out some templates. She loves drawing, but I'm not sure how to keep her entertained with it at home ㅠ_ㅠ

Yuni was so focused. I got to sit and catch my breath too, and hang up her drawing afterward 😻

There was even tuho, a traditional folk game of tossing arrows into a jar. The elementary school kids loved this one haha

Also browsed the art gallery in between.

Went up to the observation deck. Wide-open space, with seating to rest too 💚

That red mark right there is North Korea; it's wild how close it is to the observatory — a little fascinating, and a little unsettling too.

Odusan Unification Observatory isn't far from On the Rail café, making it easy to pair the two into one course! Good coffee and dessert, a fun play session, and now we're hungry — off to dinner we go.
