Garak Market beef offal grill, early Monday dinner: Midang Hanwoo

Midang Hanwoo Gopchang (미당한우곱창) is a Korean beef offal grill restaurant in the Garak Market food alley in Songpa, Seoul. On an early Monday evening the writer ordered the special Hanwoo gopchang grill set and kkakdugi (radish kimchi) fried rice; staff grilled all six cuts at the table, the offal was fresh with no gamy smell, and Midang Hanwoo Gopchang was nearly full by the time they left. With same-day-slaughtered Hanwoo beef, a clean dining room and friendly service, Midang Hanwoo Gopchang is a gopchang spot at Garak Market that gets everything right.

Yangjae Korean restaurant lunch date with ox-foot on a twig: MUSEO

MUSEO (무제오) is a Korean fine dining restaurant in Gangnam, about an 8-minute walk from Yangjae Station in Seocho, Seoul, serving a lunch course for 49,000 won per person. On a lunch date for two at MUSEO's dimly lit bar table, we had Pohang spinach steamed egg, seafood mulhoe (cold raw fish soup) in dongchimi broth, hanwoo ox-foot eaten while holding a twig, a hanwoo chuck yukhoe namul bibimbap set and makgeolli ice cream. The MUSEO lunch course suits a date or anniversary lunch when you want both atmosphere and flavor.

Company dinner hanwoo BBQ near Nonhyeon Station, Seoul: Matbaegogi

Matbaegogi (맛배고기) is a Korean BBQ restaurant serving 1++ Gangwon hanwoo (Korean beef), a 2-minute walk from Nonhyeon Station near Yeongdong Market in Gangnam, Seoul. On the first floor we ordered the Matbae special mixed set for two (sirloin, top blade and rib finger meat), which staff grilled at the table, and yukhoe bibim noodles (spicy noodles with beef tartare) and grilled pollock roe came free. With free parking, private rooms and free corkage, Matbaegogi is well worth considering for a company dinner or group gathering near Nonhyeon Station.

Apgujeong izakaya: no-alcohol highball & chicken nanban at Gatpo Karin

Gatpo Karin (갓포 카린) is a Japanese izakaya on the 4th floor of a building, a 3-minute walk from Apgujeongnodeo Station in Apgujeong Rodeo, Gangnam, Seoul, where a chef brought in from Kyoto does the cooking. Two of us sat at the bar with non-alcoholic highballs, a sashimi moriawase (chef's assortment) of 12 aged fish for 2, and chicken nanban topped with jalapeño tartar sauce; the smoked Jeju cutlassfish and the tuna stood out. Gatpo Karin is an Apgujeong Rodeo bar where you can enjoy Japanese dining and the atmosphere even on a night you're not drinking.

Nagoya tare eel rice bowl for summer stamina in Yeoksam: Unagiwa

Unagiwa is an eel rice bowl restaurant on the 2nd floor, a 4-minute walk from Yeoksam Station in Gangnam, Seoul. After work, the writer ordered Unagiwa's Nagoya-style hitsumabushi (sang size) and the twice-steamed unadon (sang size) to compare them, and was pleased with the eel soaked in tare sauce said to be imported directly from Japan and the neat set of side dishes. Choose hitsumabushi to enjoy the eel in several ways or unadon for a soft, easy-to-digest meal; Unagiwa is a Yeoksam eel rice bowl spot worth recommending for summer stamina food.

Gangnam jazz bar with Boneology at 8pm and mocktails: Flat Nine

Flat Nine is a jazz bar and course-dining spot on the 5th floor of a building between Gangnam Station and Sinnonhyeon Station in Seocho, Seoul. On this second visit the writer caught the 8pm Lee Changmin Boneology set with the Classic Course for two and two non-alcoholic cocktails, a Virgin Frozen Margarita and a Shirley Temple. With two-seat tables set right in front of the stage, Flat Nine is an easy pick for a night of music and atmosphere without any alcohol.

Bupyeong galbi restaurant: Andong-style garlic galbisal at Nocheongol

Nocheongol Bupyeong Main Branch is a beef and pork galbi restaurant a 3-minute walk from Exit 4 of Bupyeong Market Station in Bupyeong, Incheon. On this fifth visit the table shared two servings of Pocheon-style dongalbi (marinated short ribs), Andong-style garlic galbisal, beef short rib doenjang jjigae and Hamheung naengmyeon in both water and spicy versions, with the staff grilling every piece of meat.
