Ewha hair salon matte brown dye for red-toned hair + clinic: Eco Revy

In short

Eco Revy Hair Ewha Branch is a hair salon specializing in clinic treatments and head spa, near Ewha Womans University Station Exit 3 in Seodaemun, Seoul. After frequent perms and dyes had left red tones and patchy color in vintage-perm hair, the visit covered a cut, a matte brown tone-down dye and a clinic treatment, with the curls brought out by machine drying. The red-cancelling matte brown from Eco Revy Hair held up with little fading even after 2–3 weeks, a satisfying result.

Why I went back to Eco Revy Hair, a hair salon near Ewha Station

I visited Eco Revy Hair Ewha Branch just before the Chuseok holiday. I'd been thinking about toning down my color after too much perming and dyeing — this is the same Ewha Station hair salon I went to before for a recovery perm. I remembered it as Demon Hair back then, but it's changed to Eco Revy Hair now. Since Eco Revy Hair specializes in clinic treatments and head spas, this is where I go whenever I'm worried about damage.

The color my designer at Eco Revy Hair Ewha Branch recommended was matte brown. Honestly I usually like ash tones. But since red tones come up so often on my hair, I'd already been thinking matte when I came out to this Ewha Station hair salon for dye — whether it was tone-up or tone-down didn't really matter haha. What I really wanted was to fix the frizzy, uneven, messy parts before the holiday.

I told her exactly what I wanted and we picked a color together, and she recommended matte brown. Apparently it suits my yellow skin tone... I've never had a personal color consultation, but I just trust her, haha.

Ash tones are pretty, but they fade fast, and home care matters a lot to maintain them. That's also part of why I go somewhere that cares about hair damage. I've done khaki tones before too — also a matte shade, and I remember that particular color looking so pretty in and out of sunlight. Let's try it, haha.

They gave me a light drink to sip, took my bag, and I browsed Eco Revy's products while I waited. Once you start worrying about hair damage, you naturally get curious about the products salons use on you. Lately I've really been realizing how important home care is, sigh...

How long does a cut, dye, and clinic take?

With cut, dye, and clinic all together at Eco Revy Hair Ewha Branch, they told me it would take about an hour and a half, allow two hours to be safe. They showed me to my seat, shampooed first, then cut my hair. Since it had been 3–4 months, they carefully applied the dye from the parts with different tones to the connecting sections.

The window seats had a nice bright feel, while the inner seats had a calmer mood with quiet music... yeah, I nearly dozed off. The head spa area was tucked in the back separately, and the shampoo room was at the very end. Even with an early reservation, there were a lot of customers, so this photo will have to stand in for the interior.

Before: patchy vintage perm color

Oh, before that — the before shot. I'm the type that gets red tones easily. I'd gotten tired of always doing straight perms and tried a vintage perm for a change. I got a lot of compliments on how well this color and length suited me, but as time passed, the tone had gotten patchy and needed some fixing.

Balancing after dye with protein care

So they applied the dye little by little, and since it was going to be a tone-down, it felt a bit unfamiliar at first. After some time passed, they checked how the color was developing, then balanced things out with a shampoo and protein care — you know that drowsy feeling during the final shampoo, right? Even coming back after a while, Eco Revy Hair's hair care products still smell so good.

Machine drying brings out the curl better, they say

At Eco Revy Hair Ewha Branch, they said drying with a machine brings out the curl better than hand-drying, and asked if I had extra time — yes, I'm fine with that... so I took a seat. First time seeing this. Air blows gently from above, the sides, and behind, drying your hair as if it were being styled that way naturally. They finished by lightly applying an essence product.

How did the matte brown tone-down turn out?

Matte brown was a matte tone-down color that cut down the red tones, and my curls stayed alive with no extra styling needed... I don't know why I can never get this look at home. It was slightly brighter in tone, and it's been a while since I had that autumn-vibe tone-down. Nothing beats it for a fresh change of mood.

Vintage perm curls after matte brown tone-down dye

This year I did a vintage perm and ended up dyeing so often that I thought if it didn't work out, I'd just do a root touch-up instead — but it came out clean. Here's another interior shot, this is the waiting area where I had my hair dried earlier.

This is near the entrance, on the 2nd floor. Back when I used to work near Ewha, I did recovery perms and recovery straightening at Eco Revy Hair many times. Good memories — the color always comes out so pretty. Having been in the same spot for so long, they clearly have a lot of regulars, and it was nice to be back after a while.

Matte brown color, 2–3 weeks later

About 2–3 weeks after the matte brown dye, that fast-fading tone typical of ash colors is barely showing. I'd actually made a point of heading to Ewha that day, partly for a mood refresh before the holiday. Since only the darker, duller part was toned down, I'm liking the color even more now, haha. Eco Revy Hair, the Ewha Station hair salon that's great at recovery perms — I'll be back next time I dye my hair. Just a reminder, they're closed on Mondays.
