Seoul noodle restaurant with no weekend wait in Sangam: Sangam Hoegwan

In short

Sangam Hoegwan is a kongguksu (chilled soy milk noodle) restaurant in the basement food court of Sangam IT Tower in Mapo, Seoul. On a weekend family lunch the writer ordered pumpkin kongguksu, plain kongguksu and bibim guksu dumpling sets plus a squid kimchi pancake, and the wide food court meant no waiting in line. Between the thick soy broth and the crisp squid kimchi pancake, Sangam Hoegwan is an easy weekend pick in Sangam.

When you think of a classic summer treat, cold, nutty kongguksu (chilled soy milk noodles) probably comes to mind, right? But a truly great restaurant doesn't care about the season! 😆

My husband's favorite restaurant, and a legendary kongguksu spot among office workers in Sangam-dong — we finally made it to 'Sangam Hoegwan.' He'd been singing its praises for ages, insisting Sangam kongguksu means Sangam Hoegwan, no question.

But the wait was always so long we never worked up the courage to go — until we heard the happy news that it had relocated to the basement 1 food court of Sangam IT Tower and gotten much bigger and more comfortable. So we finally headed out with the family on a weekend!

Where Sangam Hoegwan is and when it opens

Sangam Hoegwan is located in the basement 1 food court of Sangam IT Tower, 434 Worldcup buk-ro, Mapo-gu, Seoul. Hours are Mon, Sat, Sun 11:00–20:00 and Tue–Fri 10:00–20:00, with a break time from 15:00 to 17:00.

Is parking easy at Sangam IT Tower?

The new location is the basement 1 food court of Sangam IT Tower. Taking the elevator down to B1, the Sangam Hoegwan standing sign and directions were right there in plain view.

Visiting on a weekend, the Sangam IT Tower parking lot was really spacious and unhurried — even new drivers could park comfortably. 🤣 Register yourself with the tablet after eating and you get up to 2 hours free parking, so there's no burden to driving there.

A food court wide enough for solo diners and families

Walking inside, the food court is (almost too) huge and spotless! With so many tables, this place would work as a great spot for a Sangam lunch — or a Sangam solo meal.

On weekday lunchtimes it's probably buzzing with office workers, but visiting on the weekend meant we could enjoy our meal in a relaxed, quiet atmosphere. Really nice.

Sangam Hoegwan menu and how to order at the kiosk

True to a kongguksu specialist, Sangam Hoegwan's menu is simple and tidy. The signature rich kongguksu is joined by pumpkin kongguksu, perilla oil mil-myeon (wheat noodles), and bibim guksu, plus mandu (dumplings) and kimchi pancake as good sides.

We ordered easily via the kiosk at the store entrance.

We wanted to try a bit of everything, so we ordered generously!

When the dishes arrived, even our fairly big table was packed full — such a generous spread! 😆

How does the signature kongguksu taste?

First up, the signature basic kongguksu. Just looking at it, the soy broth was on a completely different level from your average kongguksu.

Sangam Hoegwan's basic kongguksu with rich soy broth

They say they hand-pick and grind fresh soybeans every morning, and the moment I scooped up a spoonful of the broth, I could feel that creamy, weighty texture. There was zero beany or grassy off-note — just nuttiness and clean flavor spreading through my whole mouth. The particles were so fine that it went down incredibly smoothly, thick yet leaving a clean finish.

The noodles were chewy and springy too, boiled just right, with the broth clinging to them like it belonged there. Adding just a pinch of salt or sugar brought out the soybeans' subtle sweetness and nuttiness even more, and the more you chewed, the more natural umami came through.

Pumpkin kongguksu that kids finish

This was the one I was really looking forward to — pumpkin kongguksu! Even the color was so fresh and bright that it caught the eye right away.

I was curious how pumpkin and kongguksu would work together, and one bite in, it was exactly my taste! 😍 It tasted like a luxurious pumpkin soup reimagined cold and clean.

The soybeans' soft, nutty flavor harmonized with the pumpkin's natural sweetness, and even our kids, who don't usually go for kongguksu, ate it up happily.

Spicy-tangy bibim guksu, eaten between bites of kongguksu

Can't skip the bibim guksu (spicy mixed noodles) to refresh the palate in between. Red sauce, crunchy cucumber, and plenty of tangy, well-fermented kimchi piled on top — just looking at it got my mouth watering, haha.

Mixing the sauce through and taking a big bite, the savory spicy-tangy seasoning really woke up my appetite. Spicy, sweet, and tangy all came together perfectly, and it was a fantastic combo to alternate with the kongguksu bite by bite.

King mandu in the set and the squid kimchi pancake

Order a dumpling set and each noodle dish comes with 2 king mandu (large dumplings) — and these dumplings are quite the MVP, haha.

The wrapper was really chewy, and the filling was packed with meat, vegetables, and juice — eating them alongside the noodles made for a really filling meal. If you're visiting solo, I'd recommend upgrading to the set menu instead of just the noodles alone, so you can enjoy a hearty, varied meal.

A side dish I'd definitely recommend: the kimchi pancake! It arrives on a big plate, pan-fried to a golden brown, packed generously with kimchi and squid.

The edges in particular were so impressively crispy! The chewy texture of the pancake, the tangy crunch of the kimchi, and the bite of the squid all came together — ordering this as a side was absolutely the right call.

Weekend lunch at Sangam Hoegwan: the verdict

From the truly rich, nutty basic kongguksu, to the sweet pumpkin kongguksu, to the crispy kimchi pancake — nothing left to be desired! Thanks to the huge parking lot and comfortable food court, you can really enjoy a relaxed lunch here. If you've been craving a proper, deeply flavored bowl of kongguksu, don't hesitate — I'd definitely recommend a visit.
