Spicy dumpling hot pot in Byeollae ending in porridge: Onjeongban

With the weather making us crave something warm, we went for a dish the whole family loves: dumpling hot pot (mandu jeongol)! It comes with shabu-shabu and kalguksu too, so we visited Onjeongban Shabu Kalguksu Namyangju Byeollae Main Branch (온정반샤브칼국수 남양주별내본점) in Byeollae.

Where is Onjeongban Byeollae and where do you park?

Onjeongban Shabu Kalguksu Namyangju Byeollae Main Branch is at 14 Siksong 1-ro, Namyangju-si, Gyeonggi-do, on the first floor, and there is a dedicated Onjeongban parking lot beside the restaurant! It is open daily 10:30-21:30, with last order at 20:30. From northern Seoul it takes about 20 minutes, so Byeollae in Namyangju is a handy spot for a family meal out ◡̎

Dinner atmosphere and the private room

It was already a little past dinner time, yet the place was buzzing, which surprised me! Lots of families, and plenty of tables of coworkers from nearby having a company dinner!!

There are also small private rooms inside, but they are reservation only, for groups of at least 5 and up to 8!

What comes in the rolled dumpling hot pot for 3?

We ordered the handmade rolled dumpling hot pot for 3. It has Onjeongban shabu, rolled dumplings made in the restaurant, shabu vegetables, beef, and ingredients for kalguksu and porridge, plus unlimited gondeure rice (thistle-herb rice)! Such a generous, solid lineup, right? ദ്ദി

What you choose when ordering

• Shabu broth: clear / spicy
• Dumplings: meat / kimchi / half-and-half
• Kalguksu can be swapped for sujebi

Unlimited gondeure rice, ssokdang tea and fresh geotjeori kimchi

At Onjeongban Shabu Kalguksu Namyangju Byeollae Main Branch, the gondeure rice is unlimited!

I added sesame oil, perilla oil and Onjeongban's special sauce from the self-serve bar, and got one bowl each.

We also had a warm cup each of ssokdang tea, which is said to help control blood sugar and digestion, so it's good before a meal ◡̎ It settled my stomach before eating, which I really liked ദ്ദി

While the hot pot boiled, we had gondeure rice with kimchi. Great! The kimchi at Onjeongban is fresh geotjeori (unfermented, salad-style kimchi) mixed three times a day haha

How did the spicy dumpling hot pot taste?

How to eat it well: prep the vegetables first and get your sauce ready! Look at all those vegetables and mushrooms, so generous, right? ( ͡° ͜ʖ ͡°) ദ്ദി

The beef and the rolled dumplings were both so good!! I chose the spicy broth, and it was just mildly hot? Just right!

The rolled dumplings are made in the restaurant, so the wrappers are thin and chewy and the filling is really full!! They'd be great just steamed ❤︎ A real dumpling place in Byeollae.

Kalguksu and the fried rice that became porridge

After finishing the dumplings and vegetables, we topped up the broth from the self-serve bar and got ready for kalguksu haha The noodles seem to be made in the restaurant too, bouncy and chewy ദ്ദി

Got the kalguksu, then the fried rice stage hahaha^^ I left just a little broth, drizzled in sesame and perilla oil, and dropped in the fried rice ingredients!!! I wanted fried rice, but it turned into porridge. Still so delicious!!

Almost like a full-course meal,, we ate so well^^ haha Great to come with family, and I fully agree it's a good-value spot in Byeollae!!! ദ്ദി

Receipt review event and free dessert

Onjeongban gives one draw ticket for a receipt review event!! Prizes like a ₩40,000 free-use pass, extra shabu meat, a plate of rolled dumplings, or a plate of suyuk (boiled pork) are so good, so be sure to join in!!

Dessert is puffed-grain snacks, which older folks love, and slushies for the kids!! We ate really well and left full, so I think we'll be back ◡̎ ❤︎
