Gwangjin coffee shop for milk bingsu and Lotus financier: Wonz Coffee

On a day out at Seoul's Children's Grand Park, I went looking for a nearby café to cool off with dessert and take a break, and ended up at Wonz Coffee Children's Grand Park Main Branch. Wonz Coffee is a place where a national champion barista personally roasts and brews the coffee, so I hear they're pretty serious about it.

Not only does it have professional coffee equipment, the menu also has a good range of handmade desserts and bingsu (shaved ice), which made it a great stop after a day at the park.

That day we ordered milk bingsu, a Lotus financier, and a salty choco financier — and the combination of cool bingsu and sweet financiers worked better than I expected.

Walking down the alley, the clean-looking exterior of Wonz Coffee catches your eye.

Rather than feeling like a flashy large café, it gave off more of a specialty shop vibe focused on the coffee itself.

The sign is easy to spot, so even on my first visit, I found the place without any trouble.

What is the Wonz Coffee space like inside?

Stepping inside Wonz Coffee Children's Grand Park Main Branch, the space feels clean and calm overall.

It's not too loud or crowded, so it seemed good for a solo coffee break, as well as for dates, meeting friends, or small gatherings.

True to its coffee-shop credentials, several pieces of coffee equipment stood out around the bar area.

Wonz Coffee is equipped with professional gear including a Slayer and a Rover S, and a national champion barista handles the roasting and extraction personally, they say.

It left an impression as a place that prioritizes the taste of the coffee, not just a nice atmosphere.

What's on the menu at Wonz Coffee?

True to a coffee specialty shop, Wonz Coffee has quite a wide coffee lineup — from bean selection to espresso, cold brew, and siphon coffee.

The basic coffee menu includes the National Team Special Americano, National Team Special Café Latte, Australian-style flat white, Special Cold Brew, Special Cold Brew Latte, and Wonz Dolce Latte.

One thing unique to Wonz Coffee is that you can choose your beans for the americano and café latte to suit your taste.

If you want to try something a bit special, the siphon coffee is worth a look too.

Beans from various origins are available, including Ethiopia, Kenya, Brazil, and Colombia, so you can enjoy the distinctive aroma and flavor of each origin in more detail. The signature coffee menu was varied too.

With options like the Lotus cream latte, orange cream latte, vanilla bean cream latte, and ice cream latte, which pair sweet cream with coffee, these menu items seemed great to enjoy like dessert.

There's also a solid non-coffee menu for those who don't drink coffee — the Wonz latte, premium handmade strawberry milk, Belgian handmade chocolate milk, handmade 100% royal milk tea, Jeju organic matcha latte, real sweet potato latte, and Sanghamokjang ice cream, giving plenty of options if you're visiting with kids.

If you like refreshing drinks, there are also ades and teas to choose from, like the handmade Lemona lemon, handmade red grapefruit, pulpy green grape ade, Earl Grey peach iced tea, and organic herbal tea.

Tasting the milk bingsu and two financiers together

Since it was such a hot day, we were craving something cooling rather than coffee, so we ordered the milk bingsu, Lotus financier, and salty choco financier.

Milk bingsu: how sweet is it?

The first thing we tried was the milk bingsu. After walking around Children's Grand Park, something cool was genuinely welcome. The soft, sweet taste characteristic of milk bingsu made it easy to eat without feeling too heavy.

Rather than being sharply sweet, it had a cool, mild flavor, so it paired well with sweet desserts like the financiers.

If you're visiting with kids, I'd also recommend this as a good dish to share.

Lotus financier

The Lotus financier we ordered alongside it is a nutty financier with the distinctive sweetness of Lotus (Biscoff) added in.

It had that classic financier texture — slightly firm on the outside, moist inside — with the familiar Lotus flavor adding sweetness. If you're a fan of Lotus cookies, this is an easy dessert to reach for.

Salty choco financier

The salty choco financier let you enjoy rich chocolate sweetness alongside a hint of saltiness.

Compared to a plain chocolate dessert, the sweet-and-salty combo made the flavor feel richer, and it worked really well alternating bites with the milk bingsu.

It also seemed like it would pair well with a strong americano.

Personally, of all the combinations I tried that day, having the milk bingsu with one Lotus financier and one salty choco financier was the tastiest.
