Gopchang restaurant in Mokdong: daechang & whelk noodles, Omokgyo

Omokgyo Gopchang Mokdong Main Branch is a beef gopchang (small intestine) grill restaurant near Omokgyo Station in Yangcheon, Seoul. After about a 20-minute wait on a Friday evening, the writer had traditional handmade garlic gopchang, grilled daechang (large intestine) and Jumunjin golbaengi noodles (spicy whelk noodles) with somaek (soju mixed with beer), and was impressed by gopchang with no off-smell, studded with soft, fully cooked whole garlic, and by the generous freebies. Omokgyo Gopchang Mokdong Main Branch is worth a visit if you need a gopchang spot in Mokdong or Omokgyo for a company dinner or a night of drinks.

Hongdae izakaya after seafood with tori paitan ramen: Yakitori Iyu

Yakitori Iyu is a handmade-skewer izakaya on Jandari-ro in Mapo, Seoul, roughly between Hongik Univ. Station, Hapjeong Station and Sangsu Station. After a seafood dinner, the writer stopped at Yakitori Iyu for a second round with soju and ordered tomato salad (10,000 won), a 5-skewer set (17,800 won), tori paitan ramen (12,000 won), the signature brisket and radish noodles (13,000 won) and lemon ice cream (4,500 won). Every dish was cleaned out despite a full stomach, and the cozy mood makes Yakitori Iyu a good pick for a second round on a date or blind date.

Even on a full stomach the group ate well and took the leftover pancake home, thanks to good seasoning and a generous owner.

Late-night izakaya in Hapjeong for tteokbokki and draft beer: Sujak

Sujak Hapjeong (수작 합정점) is a Korean-style izakaya on Dongmak-ro 7-gil near Hapjeong Station in Mapo, Seoul, open until 3 or 4 a.m. On a booked visit the night before a holiday, the writer ordered the cheese corn jeon (pancake) and instant tteokbokki (spicy rice cake) set, fried chicken gizzards and Hanmaek draft beer; the beer and gizzards were satisfying, but the tteokbokki broth was very bland. Expect a wait at Sujak Hapjeong on holiday eves, so booking on Naver first is the better move.

The standout was grilling the deodeok muchim on the mini whole-garlic grill with a little sesame oil. For anyone after a staff-grilled Seoul Korean BBQ where the meat itself is delicious, Dongnaejeong Main Branch is worth the wait.

Champpoppo Jjokgalbi Hapjeong Branch is a charcoal pork rib restaurant near Hapjeong Station in Mapo, Seoul, with drum-barrel tables and a Korean street-pub (pocha) feel.
