Seogwipo seafood restaurant with a toddler: Jejurowoon Cheonghaewon

In short

Jejurowoon Cheonghaewon Seongsan Ilchulbong Branch is a seafood restaurant in Seogwipo, Jeju, less than five minutes by car from Aqua Planet Jeju during my visit. With my 29-month-old, I ordered Set A: the adults ate braised cutlassfish while my child ate grilled tilefish and seaweed soup; the high chair and children’s tableware made the meal easier.

Where did we eat with our toddler after visiting Aqua Planet Jeju?

After visiting Aqua Planet Jeju with my 29-month-old, we ate at Jejurowoon Cheonghaewon Seongsan Ilchulbong Branch (제주로운청해원 성산일출봉점). We were looking for a place where our child could eat too while the adults could have braised cutlassfish, and Set A suited our family well.

How far was it from Aqua Planet Jeju, and what was parking like?

It took less than five minutes by car from Aqua Planet Jeju. There was space for one car behind the restaurant, so I parked there and walked back around to the entrance. During my visit, parking was also possible on the road in front of the restaurant.

The yellow sign made it easy to find. There was also a notice identifying it as a Seogwipo exemplary restaurant, and the interior was spacious. Even though it was a little after lunchtime, many diners were still eating.

The posted hours during my visit were 8:00 a.m. to 9:30 p.m. daily, with last orders at 9:00 p.m. It was also described as serving breakfast without a break time.

What came with Set A for a meal with a child?

The Set A we ordered included braised cutlassfish, grilled tilefish, pot rice, and a choice of seafood stew or seaweed soup. We chose seaweed soup to share with our child.

We ordered by writing the dishes we wanted on a sheet of paper and handing it over. After confirming the order, they returned the paper, so my child and I did a little doodling while we waited for the food.

When they saw that we had a child, they promptly brought over a high chair. They also provided separate children’s tableware, which made getting ready for the meal easier.

The side dishes, grilled tilefish, and seaweed soup arrived first. The side dishes included soy sauce-marinated raw crab, which my husband likes.

It was a meal with grilled tilefish and seaweed soup for our child, plus braised cutlassfish for the adults. With all the side dishes laid out, the table was full.

The seaweed soup we chose was sea urchin seaweed soup. There was sea urchin at the bottom of the bowl.

What were the braised cutlassfish and pot rice like?

On our previous trip to Jeju, I could not eat spicy braised cutlassfish because I was choosing dishes our child could eat. This time, there was separate food for our child, so we could enjoy the braised cutlassfish too. What I remember first was how tender the fish was.

The braised cutlassfish also included large pieces of radish. The tender fish and clean-tasting radish went well with the sweet and spicy sauce.

The rice came as pot rice. We served out the freshly cooked rice, then poured water into the pot to make nurungji (scorched rice).

What did my 29-month-old eat well?

My child ate the grilled tilefish and rice well that day. They had eaten grilled mackerel many times, but it was their first time trying grilled tilefish; perhaps because it was salty, they ate both the fish and rice well. The adults enjoyed the braised cutlassfish, and I was pleased that my child also ate their own meal well.

I either removed the bones on both sides of the cutlassfish before eating it, or picked out the flesh and mixed it with radish and rice. At the end, I had one remaining piece of radish with nurungji. What I especially liked about this meal was being able to order grilled fish and soup for my child along with the rest of the meal.
