Seoulsup burger and beer bar: freelancer's daytime beer, Bas Burger

Bas Burger Seongsu is a handmade burger and beer spot between Seoulsup Station and Ttukseom Station in Seongdong, Seoul, and it recently moved two alleys over from its original location. On a weekday lunch, the writer enjoyed a daytime beer with a double bacon cheeseburger set, a wasabi mayo shrimp burger set, a chili mozzarella cheese bar and Bas Lager; the unlimited potato chip self-serve corner and clean open kitchen stood out. When you want burgers and beer after a walk in Seoulsup, Bas Burger Seongsu is a sure pick.

Gopchang restaurant at Sindang Station for daechang fans: Jinseong

Jinseong Hanwoo Gopchang Sindang Direct Branch is a Korean beef gopchang (grilled small intestine) restaurant right outside Exit 7 of Sindang Station in Jung-gu, Seoul. After a 7pm weekday wait, the writer ordered one portion each of hanwoo gopchang, daechang (large intestine) and makchang (220g each, ₩19,000–20,000), waited 10 minutes for pre-grilling and flipping, and ate them with minari garlic soy sauce, 3 kinds of kimchi and a complimentary steamed egg before finishing with kkakdugi (cubed radish kimchi) fried rice. The writer's verdict: Jinseong Hanwoo Gopchang has no weak point in atmosphere, flavor or price.

Heatwave day drinking at a Ttukdo Market eel buffet: Songnim Bok

Songnim Bok Jangeo (송림복장어) Seongsu Branch is an all-you-can-eat charcoal-grilled freshwater eel restaurant at the far end of Ttukdo Market in Seongdong, Seoul, in an alley by the north end of Yeongdong Bridge. On a 37°C weekend, the writer and a friend arrived at opening time for day drinking and spent 2 hours grilling freshwater eel, pork belly and chicken neck from the self-serve bar, finishing 3 rounds of eel, 2 bottles of soju and a free bottle of bokbunja (black raspberry wine). At ₩29,900 per adult with strong charcoal heat and good eel, Songnim Bok Jangeo is worth remembering for a boozy afternoon at Ttukdo Market.

Pork belly Hiroshima okonomiyaki by Seoul Forest: Hotcho Seongsu

Hotcho Seongsu is a Hiroshima-style okonomiyaki restaurant at the entrance to Seoul Forest in Seongdong, Seoul, between Seoul Forest and Ttukseom stations. On a fourth visit in midsummer, the writer ordered the signature set for two, Hotcho Hiroshima okonomiyaki and togarashi yakisoba, which came with complimentary yakigyoza (pan-fried dumplings). Verdict: the okonomiyaki with wide slices of pork belly, piled high with mayonnaise, is the reason to go to Hotcho Seongsu.

Summer 15-minute wait at a Sindang gopchang restaurant: Jinseong

Jinseong Hanwoo Gopchang Sindang Direct Branch is a beef gopchang (grilled beef intestine) restaurant right outside Exit 7 of Sindang Station in Jung-gu, Seoul. On a hot, humid summer day, three friends arrived in the early evening, waited about 15 minutes as the fourth party, then shared one serving each of Korean beef gopchang, daechang (large intestine) and makchang (abomasum) with beer, finishing with kkakdugi yangbap (fried rice with radish kimchi and tripe). Jinseong Hanwoo Gopchang is worth sweating through the wait for, so bring a group and plan for a queue.

Sindang Station bar for round two: honey makgeolli at Gyeryugwan

Gyeryugwan is a chicken pub in Sindang-dong, Jung-gu, Seoul, tucked into the Jungang Market alley by Sindang Station and known for chicken with neungi mushrooms roasted over oak firewood. On a second round with two friends, we had Gyeryugwan's makgeolli (rice wine) with a chunk of honey for ₩5,000 extra, the ₩23,000 oak-fired neungi chicken and the ₩15,000 chicken gizzard and scallion fritters. The food at Gyeryugwan is outstanding, but drink without pacing yourself and the end of the night will be a blur.
