Beomgye Japanese restaurant: aged sashimi course, Namhae Mulgogi

Namhae Mulgogi Anyang (남해물고기) is an aged sashimi Japanese restaurant on the 4th floor of Jungang Plaza in the Beomgye Rodeo area of Anyang, Gyeonggi. The writer ordered the aged sashimi set and ate a full course: abalone porridge, a taster of mulhoe (cold raw fish soup), aged sashimi with ankimo (monkfish liver) and shiitake soy sauce, sake-steamed clams, yuringi (crispy chicken in soy-vinegar sauce), grilled Spanish mackerel and maeuntang (spicy fish stew). Namhae Mulgogi is about sashimi quality and a calm atmosphere rather than portion size, making it a good pick for group dinners or dates.

Gwanak burger joint: bacon cheese fries and a 450g triple, Daily Fix

Daily Fix Seoul National University Entrance is a handmade Korean-beef burger restaurant on Gwanak-ro in Gwanak, Seoul, a 3-minute walk from Exit 2 of Seoul National University Station. A regular customer ordered the bacon cheese fries for the first time, plus the triple cheese burger (three hanwoo patties, 450g) and the signature double cheese burger, since the cheeseburger had been the best on past visits. Verdict: the Daily Fix bacon cheese fries eat like a main rather than a side, and both cheeseburgers were good enough to finish to the last bite.

Anyang Korean BBQ before the baby arrives: Sannae Sutbul Galbi

Sannae Sutbul Galbi Bakdal Branch is a charcoal-grill Korean BBQ restaurant tucked inside Bakdal Market in Bakdal-dong, Anyang, serving a single menu item: marinated Korean pork galbi. A couple expecting a baby went right at opening to eat their fill of charcoal-grilled meat and ordered 3 servings of galbi (250g for 15,000 won per serving) with doenjang stew, steamed egg and two bowls of rice, and found the pork tender and marinated all the way through. Sannae Sutbul Galbi Bakdal Branch shows exactly why a single-menu Korean BBQ spot in Anyang can work.

Hantiok Lotte Department Store Pyeongchon Branch is a Korean restaurant serving Andong guksi (Andong-style noodle soup) and gukbap (rice soup) in the B1 food hall of Lotte Department Store by Beomgye Station in Anyang. Beomgye pasta place revisit, ragu fries & corn pizza: Two Find Peter

Two Find Peter Beomgye Branch is a pasta and pizza restaurant on the 5th floor of Park Avenuel in Beomgye, Anyang. On this revisit the writer ordered gorgonzola cream fettuccine, a side of ragu fries and a corn pizza that takes 15 minutes to cook, and enjoyed the thick, rich cream and the crispy thin crust. Two Find Peter Beomgye Branch is a go-to whenever Western food calls, and every dish is at least solid.

Yeoksam Station eel restaurant for an early-pregnancy meal: Chisot

Chisot Yeoksam Main Branch is a hitsumabushi (grilled eel over rice) specialist near Exit 7 of Yeoksam Station and GS Art Center in Gangnam, Seoul. During a brutally hot summer and the early weeks of pregnancy, the writer ordered the deluxe hitsumabushi at Chisot and received free baby ginseng from the July–August boknal (dog days) event. The self-serve bar with unlimited warm rice and ochazuke made the meal generous enough to finish an extra bowl and a half of rice.
