Why I went to Seomin Gapbu Sijang Dakjip in Sokcho Jungang Market

Seomin Gapbu Sijang Dakjip (서민갑부 시장닭집) is a dakgangjeong shop in Sokcho Jungang Market that was featured on the TV show Seomin Gapbu. I heard they sell deodeok dakgangjeong, got curious, and went~

Sokcho Jungang Market is my go-to recommendation for any Sokcho trip! Even on a weekday lunch there were so many people. Imagine weekends and holidays, haha 🤣 I parked at the Fish Market parking lot and ran over to pick up some chicken~

I used my navigation to find it, but it's on the main street, so you won't have trouble if you wander around the market! haha Ttogine Twigim (fried snacks) and Sijang Dakjip's dakgangjeong are one shop, so while you buy chicken you can also grab fried snacks and squid sundae (stuffed squid) — all of Sokcho's famous bites in one place~

You can try a free sample of the dakgangjeong, and they also sell small cups, which looks great for eating as you walk around, haha

How long is the wait after ordering?

They make the dakgangjeong fresh once you order, so expect to wait about 15 minutes. The upside is that you get it warm! haha While I waited, I looked around at the other food~

Menu

When you walk in they hand you a menu, and you choose from that, haha. I went straight for deodeok dakgangjeong to take away~ I was torn because people say the garlic dakgangjeong is great too, but I was so curious about the deodeok that I went with that alone 😆

Indoor seating

There's also a space at the back of the shop where you can eat right away, so if you'd like to eat in, go for it, haha

The inside of the shop is nice and clean too.

Taking deodeok dakgangjeong to eat at Sokcho Beach

The deodeok dakgangjeong is ₩24,000. Our chicken is ready~~ Now I'm going to eat it at Sokcho Beach 😆

Finally, the big reveal~~ deodeok dakgangjeong! As I carried the chicken box around, people nearby saw it and said Sijang Dakjip is delicious, haha. I wondered just how good it would be 🥰

Wow, it looked so delicious. The chicken was piled with deodeok and seeds, and the color of the sauce was so pretty!!

How does deodeok dakgangjeong taste — is the deodeok bitter?

The deodeok in Seomin Gapbu Sijang Dakjip's deodeok dakgangjeong wasn't bitter at all. I was worried it might be, but it was for nothing! It was so chewy and delicious that it was good on its own, and it went really well with the chicken too!

If I'd known it would be this good, I would have added extra deodeok, and I regretted it, ugh ㅠ It's only ₩3,000 more! ㅠ The deodeok was so much better than I expected that I was sad about it, haha

The chicken is boneless, so it's easy to eat, and true to a market chicken shop it has a strong old-school flavor: chewy and sweet. Exactly the dakgangjeong taste I like! haha

How big is the portion, and is it good cold?

The deodeok dakgangjeong portion is big, so I couldn't finish it at Sokcho Beach and saved the rest. I picked at it in the car and ate more at home, and it was good even cold, so it vanished fast. I wish I'd bought more. It's an unusual and delicious dakgangjeong, so definitely try it!
