In short

MUG is a large bakery café with a charred-wood exterior at 90 Hyangsandagae-ro in Sangbuk-myeon, Ulju-gun, Ulsan, open 10:00–20:00. After a late lunch, the writer stopped in with her youngest son for one iced americano and a piece of bakery while looking out at the Yeongnam Alps, then walked the metasequoia forest trail beside the café, reached straight from the Hyangsan-ri interchange on Route 24. MUG turns the memory of a wildfire into charred-wood architecture, making it a café with a story as well as a view.

MUG in Eonyang, Ulsan: the large bakery café we stopped at after a late lunch

MUG is a large bakery café at 90 Hyangsandagae-ro, Sangbuk-myeon, Ulju-gun, Ulsan. Today my youngest and I grabbed lunch in Eonyang and came here for coffee.

MUG, this Eonyang bakery café, is a charming space with a wide-open view of the Yeongnam Alps and a story behind it — a great café for enjoying drinks and bakery items in a relaxed atmosphere, with a walking path and rest area to boot.

Why MUG's charred-wood exterior holds the memory of a wildfire

Located near Jinae-ri in Sangbuk-myeon, MUG (탄목원, Tanmokwon) is well known as a bakery café whose building was destroyed in the 2013 Eonyang, Ulju wildfire, then rebuilt around the concept of charred wood — turning the memory of the fire into an architectural material.

MUG's exterior wall finished in charred wood

On the site of the wildfire damage, they used charred wood (also known as yakisugi, or 탄화목재) — timber with its surface burned to harden it — as interior and exterior material, for a design concept with real story behind it…

Detail of MUG's charred-wood finish

The concept turns the tragic memory of the wildfire into symbolic design, and apparently it's also a smart construction choice functionally — durable, insect-resistant, and moisture-resistant.

The unique aesthetic — the heavy, quiet mood of the charred surface — creates a striking contrast with the surrounding mountains and nature.

MUG in Sangbuk-myeon, Ulsan, is a distinctive place that uses charred wood (탄목) as its main architectural and interior material, in order to hold both the memory of the site's past wildfire damage and the story of nature's survival.

Sign telling the story of MUG

The story of MUG… Everyone has at least one painful memory. This place, where 10 hectares of forest were destroyed in a large wildfire years ago, is one such place of painful memory. By finishing the building materials in blackened, charred wood, and contrasting them against the green forest now being newly restored, we wish to share with everyone the experience of healing from pain and being filled again with something new. Good bakery, a cinnamon roll, and a date with my son. The start of a long, long road of life. On that long road that loops around and comes back — rather than rushing, if you build things up step by step, one thing at a time, that faraway, long road ahead will be a comfortable one someday… It'll be okay…
