Nampo-dong Korean BBQ date: no-wait pork ribs and beer, Bueongi Maeul
In short
Bueongi Maeul (부엉이마을) is a pork rib BBQ restaurant tucked inside Kkangtong Market in Nampo-dong, Jung-gu, Busan, known for pre-grilled marinated pork ribs. The writer and her boyfriend walked into Bueongi Maeul without a wait around 6 p.m. on a weekday after work and shared 800g of pre-grilled marinated pork ribs with beer; the less-sweet marinade, pollack roe lettuce wraps and complimentary steamed egg stood out. Verdict: Bueongi Maeul is a place worth returning to for a meat-loving couple's evening date in Nampo-dong.

An after-work date in Nampo-dong: why Bueongi Maeul?
Bueongi Maeul (부엉이마을) is a pork rib BBQ restaurant that has built a word-of-mouth reputation in Nampo-dong. I wanted proper meat, so my boyfriend and I headed there after work. Lately, deciding what to eat for dinner after work is our biggest dilemma. We keep eating the same things, so we keep hunting for new places, and this time we settled on meat.

Weekday at 6 p.m.: was there a wait?
When we arrived around 6 p.m. on a weekday, it was quieter than I expected, so we got in right away with no wait. We settled in comfortably, and while we ate, customers trickled in one by one until the place was packed. Of course, Busan's Kkangtong Market restaurants are popular for a reason.

Bueongi Maeul sits inside Kkangtong Market, so it's easy to reach. It's convenient after work and an easy-going location for a Nampo-dong date.

Bueongi Maeul atmosphere: good for chatting while you eat?
The inside of Bueongi Maeul has a homey feel with comfortable seating. It isn't a rowdy drinking-pub vibe, so it's a nice place to talk over a meal, and my boyfriend and I had a cozy time. The weather was lovely that day, so I bet sitting outside would have been great too! If you love outdoor street-style seating (yajang), this is the place!!

800g of pre-grilled marinated pork ribs: how did they taste?
At Bueongi Maeul we ordered 800g of pre-grilled marinated pork ribs. We came to a pork rib place, so of course we had to order the pork ribs!

The ribs arrive already partly grilled, so they didn't take long to cook, and the color of the meat looked appetizing from the start. The marinade wasn't too sweet. It was pleasantly salty with a rich savory depth.

The meat was tender and moist, and the more I chewed, the more juice I tasted. With a glass of beer, the whole day's tiredness melted away. Above all, the portion was generous, enough to leave the two of us satisfied. I think a couple who loves meat would be happy with this.

Pollack roe at a BBQ restaurant?
The pork ribs at Bueongi Maeul come with plenty of side dishes, like myeongi namul (pickled wild greens), scallion salad and stir-fried kimchi. They were all delicious, but what I remembered most was the myeongran (seasoned pollack roe). It's not common for a BBQ place to serve roe alongside, right? It felt a little unfamiliar at first, but once I tried it, I immediately understood why they serve it.

Put a piece of marinated rib on a lettuce leaf, add a little roe, and the salty savory flavor makes it much deeper. After one bite, my boyfriend and I said "so good!" at the same time, haha. Personally, I think it's Bueongi Maeul's standout point. I've been to a number of BBQ places in Nampo-dong, but this combination was a first.

Free steamed egg
Bueongi Maeul serves a fluffy steamed egg (gyeran-jjim) as a standard freebie, and it was really good too. It pairs wonderfully with the marinated ribs: after the salty meat, a bite of soft steamed egg left my mouth feeling clean. Even though it's a complimentary dish, you can feel the care put into it, which made me even happier.

Would I recommend Bueongi Maeul as a Nampo-dong BBQ spot?
Bueongi Maeul is a place I'd recommend to anyone looking for good food in Nampo-dong. The tender texture of the pre-grilled pork ribs, the savory marinade and the special combination with pollack roe left an impression.

We got in without a wait on a weekday evening, but seeing the seats fill up fast, you can tell plenty of people already know this Nampo-dong favorite. If you like the meat-and-roe combo or want to try something a bit different, I recommend visiting. Next time I'm looking for BBQ in Nampo-dong, I'd like to go back to Bueongi Maeul.
