Pork belly BBQ dinner in Dongtan with free steamed egg: Hanmaeum

I don't know why I've been craving pork belly so much lately! I finally had dinner in the 11-ja shopping strip (a row of restaurants shaped like the number 11) in Dongtan. It was a weekend, so I expected a parking nightmare, but I got lucky: there was one empty spot right in front of the restaurant, and I parked!

Where is Hanmaeum Butcher Restaurant Dongtan, and what are the hours and parking?

Hanmaeum Butcher Restaurant Dongtan (한마음정육식당 동탄점) is in the 11-ja strip in Yeongcheon-dong, Dongtan, and it is open every day from 11:30 to 22:00. For parking, you can use the public roadside lot with 1.5 hours free, and there's also room for about 3–4 cars in front of the restaurant.

What is the atmosphere like inside Hanmaeum Butcher Restaurant Dongtan?

The dining room is fairly large and set up with round tables, so it's a nice place for 3–4 people to sit and chat while grilling meat! It was so crowded when we first walked in that I took the interior photos on the way out. Since it was the weekend, lots of families were out for a meal. There are so many places to eat around here, but this Yeongcheon-dong pick is Hanmaeum Butcher Restaurant Dongtan~!

Beyond the meat, you can help yourself to plenty of ssam vegetables and side dishes. And as the name (jeongyuk sikdang, a butcher-shop-style restaurant) suggests, it has that butcher feel, serving fresh meat you grill yourself.

What should two people order at Hanmaeum?

My friend and I ordered the half pig set (500g, ₩36,000) at Hanmaeum Butcher Restaurant Dongtan. For two people, a half portion of either beef or pork is about right, and for 3–4 people you can order the whole portion and eat to your heart's content.

What side dishes come with the meal at Hanmaeum?

Hanmaeum Butcher Restaurant Dongtan brings out chilled acorn jelly (muk), doenjang stew (soybean paste stew), steamed egg, pickled onion and salad as the basics. That's why I was already happy before the meat arrived: all kinds of vegetables and sides kept coming. Even the doenjang stew comes as a free default, and with such a generous spread the value felt great.

Half pig for ₩36,000: how are the taste and portion?

I loved that the half pig at Hanmaeum lets you try pork belly, five-layer belly, neck, jowl and gabeuri all in one go!

If the pork is this good, how good must the beef be! I put on my apron and got ready to grill in earnest.

The heat is strong, so everything cooks well! They put kimchi on one side of the grill so you can eat it together with the meat. It's moderately noisy, which makes it a nice spot to chat over a drink, so I'd also recommend it for a company dinner in the 11-ja strip.

I liked being able to try so many cuts at once, and maybe because of that butcher-shop feel, the quality of the meat was really good too. Getting this whole lineup for ₩36,000 seems like a very fair price.

Even though you grill it yourself, the grill plate doesn't let the meat stick, and the strong heat cooks it nicely :-)

There's no need to order a separate stew: I just ordered rice to go with the free doenjang stew, and it worked as a hearty meal too.

With ssam vegetables, myeongi-namul (pickled wild garlic-like greens) and onions on the side, the meat is even more generous and delicious!

After the pork belly and five-layer belly, we grilled the neck and enjoyed that too.

Is a half pig enough for two people?

The half pig alone was plenty filling for the two of us. If we had added side dishes or a meal menu, we'd have been in trouble because we'd have been too full, haha. The portions are big and the quality is good, so this is a great pork BBQ spot in the 11-ja strip.

After a tasty dinner, we finished with coffee at a nearby café! The 11-ja strip has all kinds of food categories, so it's fun to pick and choose.
