Jongno 3-ga bakery on a half day off: 6 gift breads at opening, Munhwa

Munhwa Bakery (문화제빵) is a takeout-only bakery with hanok-style design on Donhwamun-ro in Jongno, Seoul, near Exit 7 of Jongno 3-ga Station. On a half day off, the writer visited Munhwa Bakery right at opening and bought 6 breads as gifts (a mugwort rice cake bun, 2 milk cream buns, garlic bread, a peanut bun and a walnut bun) for under ₩30,000. Munhwa Bakery sells only bread baked that day and shares unsold bread with people in need, making it a good Jongno bakery for buying gift bread.

Suyu, Seoul tonkatsu with cold udon & jumbo shrimp: Katsu Shokudou

Katsu Shokudou Suyu is a Japanese tonkatsu restaurant serving yuzu-aged, handmade cutlets on the 1st floor of Episode Suyu 838, near Exit 5 of Suyu Station (Line 4) in Gangbuk, Seoul. On a hot day, the cold udon set (₩15,000) and the mixed katsu set with a jumbo fried shrimp (₩20,000), served with cold soba on the side, came with crisp, non-greasy batter, and the usually unfinished tonkatsu was eaten to the last bite. Katsu Shokudou Suyu is a good pick for cold noodles and tonkatsu in one meal near Suyu Station in summer.

Gyodae gimbap restaurant after work: spam roll tops two sets, Halls

Halls Gimbap Main Branch (홀스김밥본점) is a gimbap and Korean snack restaurant near Exit 1 of Gyodae Station in Seocho, Seoul. It has held the same spot for 8 years and was formerly Oto Gimbap Seocho. On the way home from work, the writer ordered the spam dakgangjeong (sweet crispy fried chicken) set and the Halls dakgangjeong set: black rice gimbap with more filling than rice, plus crispy, mild, slightly sweet dakgangjeong. Spam gimbap was the final pick, and Halls Gimbap Main Branch is recommended when you want a generous, filling meal.

Mushroom wasabi wrap at a Jongno3-ga Korean BBQ: Cham Dwaejitgan

Cham Dwaejitgan Jongno Main Branch is a Korean BBQ restaurant on the first floor of the Piccadilly CGV building, right outside Exit 2-1 of Jongno3-ga Station in Seoul. Staff grill the Boseong green pork belly (16,000 won) and gabrisal, or pork collar cap (19,000 won), at the table, and of the six signature wrap combos on offer, the mushroom wasabi wrap and the crispy potato slice wrap were the ones worth repeating. Every vegetable side except minari comes with unlimited refills, so half the fun at Cham Dwaejitgan is building your own combo.

Isu Station Japanese restaurant, half cheese, half loin katsu: Kosi

Kosi Isu Branch is a Japanese restaurant serving house-made udon and tonkatsu near Isu Station in Dongjak, Seoul. Visiting at 6:30pm without a reservation for two, the writer found the place fully packed but scored a sofa seat, ordering toriten bukkake udon for ₩11,000 and mixed tonkatsu for ₩13,500, with the chewy cold udon soaked in unsalted sauce the standout dish. If choosing just one menu item again, it would be the bukkake udon.
