Daeyeon-dong pork soup solo lunch, lean gukbap and jowl suyuk: Geumsu

In short

Geumsu Dwaeji Gukbap Gyeongseong-Pukyongdae Branch is a 24-hour pork and rice soup (dwaeji gukbap) restaurant in Daeyeon-dong, Nam-gu, Busan, near Exit 1 of Gyeongseongdae–Bugyeongdae Station. For a solo lunch, the writer ordered dwaeji gukbap (9,500 won) with lean meat instead of the regular cuts, plus a sampler of boiled pork (maebogi suyuk, 14,000 won) with pork jowl and pork belly; thin wheat noodles, rice and side dishes are self-serve and unlimited. The clean, light lean-meat gukbap and what the writer calls the best suyuk ever had at a gukbap restaurant made Geumsu Dwaeji Gukbap a meal with nothing left to wish for.

Why I picked Geumsu Dwaeji Gukbap for a solo lunch in Daeyeon-dong

Geumsu Dwaeji Gukbap Gyeongseong-Pukyongdae Branch (금수돼지국밥 경성부경대점) is famous for delicious pork soup in Daeyeon-dong, so I chose it for my solo lunch. I was out in Daeyeon-dong for the first time in a while, searched for somewhere to eat alone, and decided to try Geumsu.

It's a well-loved gukbap (rice soup) spot near Kyungsung University, close to Exit 1 of Kyungsung Univ·Pukyong National Univ Station. It was lunchtime, so there were especially many students from the nearby universities.

All kinds of customers were here: friends, coworkers eating together, solo diners like me, and people having a daytime drink.

I ordered two things: a bowl of pork soup (₩9,500) and the sampler boiled pork, maebogi suyuk (₩14,000). You can ask for "lean meat" for either the gukbap meat or the suyuk. I only asked for the meat in the pork soup to be changed to lean.

Table set with pork soup, sampler suyuk and side dishes

The table was loaded with side dishes and main dishes, almost enough to break the table legs. Both the gukbap and the suyuk, sprinkled with chopped scallions, looked delicious just to look at.

Unlimited noodles and rice, and are there baby chairs?

At Geumsu you can take as many side dishes, thin wheat noodles (somyeon) and extra bowls of rice as you like. With unlimited noodles and rice, everyone who eats here seems to leave full.

Baby chairs are available, so it's easy to come with a little one.

How the lean-meat pork soup tasted

The pork soup has a milky white broth packed with scallions.

Since I asked for lean meat, the bowl was full of lean pork that wouldn't worry even dieters. Not much fatty meat, which I like.

Add the seasoning paste on the table and the salted shrimp (saeujeot) served separately to your taste. The seasoning paste is a little spicy, so add it bit by bit and taste as you go.

Milky broth, light lean meat and chives together? There's no way this could taste bad.

I also tried the gukbap meat with the onion soy sauce.

How is the pork jowl and belly sampler suyuk?

The sampler suyuk (₩14,000) is good enough that I'd call it the best suyuk I've had at any gukbap restaurant so far. The chopped scallions on top aren't spicy at all and actually boost the savory flavor of the meat.

The sampler includes both pork jowl and pork belly, so you get a variety of flavors. Each has its own charm, and the overall quality is so good I couldn't pick a favorite.

Tender, soft suyuk with hot gukbap... I couldn't have asked for more. A really satisfying meal.

A 24-hour gukbap restaurant near Kyungsung and Pukyong universities

If you want gukbap near Pukyong National University or Kyungsung University, give Geumsu a visit. The Gyeongseong-Pukyongdae Branch is open 24 hours, so it's a good place to eat whether it's early morning or late evening.

Lunch finished with suyuk and gukbap

Many reviews say the sampler sundae (Korean blood sausage) is good too, not just the suyuk, so next time I'll order it as a side.
