Doesn't a breezy evening always make you crave a cold draft beer and perfectly grilled skewers? I found the perfect spot for winding down after work or setting the mood on a weekend — Yakitori Shomong, a skewer specialist that's become word-of-mouth famous around Mapo and Gongdeok!

Spoiler alert: this place nailed both atmosphere and flavor, with a yakitori course full of charcoal aroma plus a floor-to-ceiling window view, haha.

When you clock out around Gongdeok or Mapo, it's honestly hard to find a Japanese place that's not too loud but still has a clean vibe — a rowdy pojangmacha (street tent bar) feels like too much, but somewhere overly formal is exhausting after a long day. This is exactly the kind of Gongdeok izakaya that comes to mind. My friend and I had been meaning to try proper Japanese skewers for a while, so we finally made the trip.

Window seat or bar table at Yakitori Shomong?

The moment you walk in, the wide-open floor-to-ceiling window immediately catches your eye! Sitting by the window watching the outside while leisurely enjoying skewers and beer — the layout is just perfect for that, haha. The wide sightline gives zero sense of being cooped up, and the whole space bursts with the kind of mood that's great for a date or a small get-together!

The bar table has a different charm from the window seats — you can actually watch the skewers being grilled, which is a special experience.

The tables are set up neatly, and there's a spot to store your belongings or bag under the chair so you don't have to worry about losing anything.

What comes in the 6-skewer yakitori omakase and yakisoba order

We ordered the yakitori omakase 6-skewer course and yakisoba (fried noodles) to enjoy a full meal!

There was shichimi (Japanese seven-spice) powder on the table, and the side dish was gungchae (pickled aster greens), haha.

In order, out came sirloin, negima (chicken thigh and scallion), tsukune (chicken meatball), heart, shoulder, and wing — each one carrying that full charcoal aroma, and the smell alone was amazing the second they arrived. The first ones we tried, sirloin and negima, had zero off-flavor, crispy on the outside and juicy with meat juice on the inside!

My personal favorite is the tsukune. It's seriously so good — the sweet sauce is out of this world!

The heart had an outstanding chewy texture.

We devoured the shoulder and wing too, and it was almost a shame to stop there!

Classic yakitori and yakisoba at Yakitori Shomong

We ordered yakisoba on the side! Can you see how generously they piled on the katsuobushi (bonito flakes) on top? The katsuobushi dancing gently on top and the sweet-salty sauce soaked in so well that it just called for more beer.

Is Yakitori Shomong worth it for skewers and beer in Mapo?

Between the owner's friendly service and the high quality of every single skewer, I felt like I was healing the whole time I was eating, haha. Chatting away while people-watching through the big window, I completely lost track of time!
