Private rooms + roomy, easy parking + healthy food that sits well in your stomach! I went to Gim Myeongju Tteuranchae Bapsang Sinjungdong Branch (김명주뜰안채밥상 신중동점), a Korean restaurant in Bucheon that's great for taking your parents!

When you look for a place to take your parents, there's more to think about than you'd expect, right?

Exterior of Gim Myeongju Sinjungdong Branch

Clean and tidy is a given, but then you check whether the seasoning is gentle enough to keep your stomach comfortable, whether parking is easy, whether the mood is neat and proper, and the list of candidates shrinks fast.

This time I took my parents to a Bucheon Korean restaurant and came away with total praise, so I'm writing it up with a bit of personal bias.

From the neatly laid-out side dishes to the steaming, freshly made pressure-cooker rice, it was a deeply satisfying place to treat someone you care about. 🌿

What are the hours and parking at Gim Myeongju Sinjungdong?

Gim Myeongju Sinjungdong Branch is open daily 10:30-21:30 (last order 20:50) and has no break time. There's a large private parking lot, and parking attendants are on hand!

It was a rainy, gloomy day and the staff were still super friendly!

It's about a 5-minute walk from Sinjungdong Station on Line 7, so it's really easy by public transport. Driving is no worry either: the lot is spacious and the attendants guide you kindly, so even new drivers can come without parking stress~

A Bucheon Korean restaurant with no break time

What I personally liked most about Gim Myeongju was that there's no break time!

Korean set-meal restaurants often close between 3 and 5 pm, which makes planning awkward. Here there's no break, so even if you book an in-between afternoon slot, you're not rushed and can enjoy a relaxed meal.

Why I chose Gim Myeongju for a Korean meal with my parents

There are meat dishes too~!
Korean set meal menu at Gim Myeongju

My parents prefer a hanjeongsik (Korean set meal) style that leaves them comfortable afterwards over greasy, heavily seasoned restaurant food. So this time I really wanted to treat them to a proper, hot bowl of rice.

They cook the rice to order with rice milled that same day, and the side dishes and cheonggukjang (fermented soybean stew) are made in the restaurant every morning, so it seemed like a clean, neat meal to treat them to. 🍚

Spacious dining room and private rooms

The first thing I thought walking into the Sinjungdong Branch was how wide open it is! The tables are spaced far apart, so noise from other tables won't drown out your family conversation.

The whole place has a warm yet tidy wood-tone feel. And the reason I'd especially recommend it for gatherings is that the private rooms are very well done!

It's perfect if you're looking for a Bucheon Korean restaurant for a small family get-together, a group dinner, or a parent's birthday party that needs privacy~ I saw lots of reviews from people holding 70th birthday parties here, and now I get why!

What's at the Gim Myeongju self-bar?

The second reason I liked Gim Myeongju is the clean self-bar! All the tasty side dishes are also sold at the counter, so if you like one, you can buy it~

The ugeoji jjigae (braised dried cabbage leaves) was especially good! It's a side you rarely see at other Korean restaurants and I'd always missed it, so I was thrilled to find my favorite here. 🤤🤤

At Korean restaurants you often feel awkward asking for side dish refills, but here the neat side dishes fill the self-bar and you can take as much as you like. Lots of guests come and go and take a lot, but the staff refill quickly and turnover is fast, so you get freshly made sides~

Plum drink and omija (five-flavor berry) tea are unlimited refills too!

Yellow rice and barley rice

There are even two kinds of rice, yellow rice (hwangmi) and barley rice, so everyone can pick what suits their taste.

Main menu lineup at Gim Myeongju

Gim Myeongju is a good-value setup: a basic set meal, plus a main dish of your choice added on. The popular signature dishes are as follows.

Main menu lineup at Gim Myeongju
  • Charcoal-grilled pork: a faint charcoal aroma soaks through, a no-fuss pick for all ages
  • Soy sauce marinated crab (ganjang gejang): not harshly salty, full of roe and meat, the eternal rice thief
  • Barley-dried yellow croaker (boril gulbi): firmly dried with a rich, nutty flavor, a premium set-meal dish
  • Cockle salad (kkomak muchim): plump cockles tossed in a savory seasoning, a real treat

How was the main dish, the cockle salad?

Table with basic sides and the ordered cockle salad

We held our gathering with the basic sides plus the plump cockle salad as our main~

The cockles were full and bouncy, so the chew was really there! No fishy taste, and the spicy-sweet seasoning that clings to your mouth is just wicked. 👍 My parents said the seasoning wasn't harsh and was just right, and they ate well, which made me proud.

Scoop freshly made pot rice into a bowl, pile on plenty of cockle salad, drizzle on the perilla oil from the self-bar and mix it all up. The nuttiness and savory depth explode and really wake up your appetite. 🤤

Pressure-cooker rice, cheonggukjang and the basic sides

The heart of Korean food is the rice, isn't it? I lifted the lid of the just-cooked pressure-cooker rice, made with rice milled that day, and it was glossy and shining~ Even a spoonful of plain rice tasted sweeter the more I chewed.

The cheonggukjang here is deep and rich. No funky smell, just a genuinely robust savory flavor, and my parents loved it stirred into their rice.

The basic sides are varied too: japchae (glass noodle stir-fry), spinach and chwinamul (aster greens), braised lotus root, stir-fried eggplant, braised potatoes and doraji (bellflower root) salad.

Overall the seasoning isn't heavy or harsh but has depth, so even just topping freshly cooked pressure-cooker rice with the sides, you'll finish a bowl in no time~

Good to know before you visit

I recommend reserving a room at the Sinjungdong Branch so you can relax! Private rooms are popular on weekends and at dinner peak, so if you're taking your parents, book ahead before you go.

The staff were really kind too, and the carefully made sides, which keep the natural taste of fresh ingredients, plus the freshly cooked pot rice kept me in a good mood throughout the meal.

From taste to atmosphere, parking and service, nothing was lacking at this Bucheon Korean restaurant, Gim Myeongju Sinjungdong Branch! If you're planning a neat Korean meal in Sinjungdong with people you care about, keep it on your radar. Next time I plan to come back for the barley gulbi combo! Officially a rice thief! 🍚
