In short

Munhwa Bakery (문화제빵) is a takeout bakery with a tiled-roof (giwa) interior on Donhwamun-ro in Jongno, Seoul, near Jongno 3-ga Station Exit 6. On a return visit, the writer took home four breads from Munhwa Bakery (coffee bread, squid ink condensed milk bread, injeolmi bread and peanut bread) and compared each one's dough and cream. Munhwa Bakery in Jongno 3-ga: what did I buy this time?

This time I ordered four breads from Munhwa Bakery (문화제빵): coffee bread, squid ink condensed milk bread, injeolmi (roasted soybean powder rice cake) bread and peanut bread. It's a must-stop on my bakery pilgrimage whenever I'm at Jongno 3-ga Station, and I stopped by again.

A place that suits both young people's and older folks' tastes! (Honestly, you can just grab any bread here.)

And it seems like every time I come, there are one or two new items? The dough is good to begin with, so whatever you eat, no regrets at this Jongno 3-ga bakery. It's a nice stop after wandering Ikseon-dong or Jongmyo.

Of course... if you come too late, the breads may be sold out. That's how many people come here 🩷 I'd love to stash them in my freezer, they're that good. The shapes may look a bit rustic, but the taste is guaranteed.

Munhwa Bakery is at 65 Donhwamun-ro, Jongno-gu, Seoul, on the 1st floor. Come out of Jongno 3-ga Station Exit 6 and walk straight up. You'll see a shop with a tiled-roof look, and that's Munhwa Bakery.

It was first famous for its garlic bread, so I tried it: the garlic sauce is rich and the bread is fluffy, so it's delicious. I came for the garlic bread but fell for the other breads 😘

Can you eat in at Munhwa Bakery? How is takeout packed?

The inside is small and there's no space to eat, so you tell them which breads you want and they pack them up. That's why it's mostly takeout customers who come here.

The breads are quite big. Going by the names, the lineup is mostly flavors older folks would like too. The coffee bread is very long, so they slice it before packing. They bag each bread separately so they don't mix 👏 (Even when it's crowded inside, they're fast, so you'll get in quickly.)

What does Munhwa Bakery's peanut bread taste like?

Munhwa Bakery's peanut bread has crushed peanuts clinging to the outside and peanut cream inside. In between there's a crumble that tastes a bit like dalgona (sugar candy).

I ate it at home, and you can taste the peanut even on the outside. Inside it's soft, fluffy bread with a nutty cream. Once you try it, you'll finish the whole thing 🧡 It's that good a peanut bread.

What is Munhwa Bakery's injeolmi bread like?

Munhwa Bakery's injeolmi bread has a thin dough, sandwiching red bean paste with cream cheese on top.

The injeolmi soybean powder sticks firmly on the outside, so you get that nutty soybean aroma together with the sweet red bean. It made me want a glass of milk 🥛 Nutty and sweet, it can't not be good!

Munhwa Bakery's coffee bread, my first time

Munhwa Bakery's coffee bread is a slightly darker bread with coffee in the dough too, and coffee cream inside 👀 It's soft and fluffy like the peanut bread.

It isn't overly sweet and smells great, which makes it charming. I'll pick it next time I visit!

Maybe because it's so long? There was a lot of it too.

What is the texture of Munhwa Bakery's squid ink condensed milk bread?

Munhwa Bakery's squid ink condensed milk bread has sweet cream in the middle, and its dough is denser and a bit firmer than the other breads. Since the cream in the middle is soft, the texture and combination were just right.

Is Munhwa Bakery in Jongno 3-ga worth a visit?
