Gyukatsu restaurant in Cheonan with a taste of Osaka: Izawa

Izawa Cheonan Sinbu-dong Branch is a gyukatsu (breaded beef cutlet) restaurant on the 2nd floor of the Sinbu-dong food alley, across from Shinsegae Department Store in Cheonan. The writer and her husband ordered 2 gyukatsu sets, and the striploin gyukatsu arrived nearly rare; they seared it well on a mini brazier and found it tasted much like the gyukatsu they ate on an Osaka trip years ago. With rice and salad refills and generous portions, Izawa Cheonan Sinbu-dong Branch is a filling gyukatsu stop in Sinbu-dong.

Sinbu-dong, Cheonan café: crème brûlée soufflé, 25-min wait, Andamiro

Andamiro Pancake Cheonan is a soufflé pancake café on the 2nd floor of a building on Meokgeori 4-gil in Sinbu-dong, Cheonan. Before a trip to Shinsegae Department Store, the writer and her husband ordered a crème brûlée soufflé with added vanilla ice cream, a matcha einspänner and an iced vanilla bean latte, then waited about 25 minutes for a soufflé that melted in the mouth. With big, sunlit windows and delicious desserts and drinks, Andamiro Pancake Cheonan was a complete success.

Thin-crust pizza to go in Sinbu-dong, Cheonan: Supreme, Clap Pizza

Clap Pizza Cheonan-Asan Shinsegae is a thin-crust pizza restaurant on the 4th floor of Building B at Shinsegae Department Store in Sinbu-dong, Cheonan. The writer stopped by with her husband and took home a large Clap Supreme. It was still warm after the 20-minute trip, and the chewy crust and mild toppings were even better with hot sauce and garlic dipping sauce. For thin-crust fans who want to really taste the toppings, Clap Pizza Cheonan-Asan Shinsegae is a solid pick for lunch or pizza and beer in Sinbu-dong.

Pyeongtaek Korean BBQ, 280g pork with self-bar garlic: Ihwajeong

Ihwajeong Charcoal-Grilled Pork Galbi is a charcoal-grilled pork galbi restaurant on the 2nd floor of a building at 1662 Manse-ro in Sosabeol, Pyeongtaek. After a stop at Starfield Anseong, the writer's family ordered 3 servings of seasoned grilled pork (280g per serving), doenjang jjigae (soybean paste stew) and rice; the thick cuts cooked gently without burning, and the meal came with Korean-banquet-style side dishes and a pear smoothie for dessert. With its spacious dining room and large parking lot, Ihwajeong is a Pyeongtaek BBQ spot worth recommending for family gatherings.

Danyang fried chicken shop on a Cheonan day trip: 50-min pickup

Danyang Heukmaneul Nurungji Dakgangjeong is a black garlic dakgangjeong (sweet glazed fried chicken) shop in Danyang Gugyeong Market, Danyang-eup, Chungbuk. On a day trip from Cheonan during a Danyang festival, the writer prepaid and picked up the Original black garlic nurungji dakgangjeong and black garlic makgeolli 50 minutes later. The sauce had deep black garlic flavor without ketchup or sugary sweetness, and the handmade griddle-pressed nurungji stood out. At 20,000 won for a generous portion, Danyang Heukmaneul Nurungji Dakgangjeong is worth adding to a Danyang itinerary.

Korean BBQ with parking at Suwon Station: Cheongdo minari, Ssosam 208

Ssosam 208 Suwon Station Branch is a stone-grill pork belly restaurant on Deogyeong-daero 895beon-gil near the Suwon Station Rodeo area in Suwon, where staff grill the meat for you and a parking lot sits right next door. The blogger ordered 3 servings of pork belly with Cheongdo minari (water dropwort), beef-belly doenjang stew, bibim naengmyeon and pork skin, and especially loved the free kimchi rice noodles and the generous minari. If you are driving to Suwon Station and want an unhurried pork belly meal, Ssosam 208 Suwon Station Branch is a great fit.

Danyang market bakery 5 years on, cream survives a hot day: Danppang

Danppang Bakery (단빵제빵소) is a garlic bread bakery inside Gugyeong Market in Danyang, Chungbuk. Returning after about 5 years, the writer waited roughly 20 minutes, bought the 4-flavor assorted set for 14,000 won, and carried it home on a hot day with the cream still intact to compare all four flavors. Danppang Bakery's garlic breads are large and generously filled with cream, making the set a recommended Danyang souvenir or gift.

Cheonan izakaya with honey Kirin beer and chicken skewers: Torikichi

Torikichi Cheongdang (토리키치 청당점) is a Japanese-style izakaya in the Cheongsu-dong and Cheongdang-dong area of Dongnam-gu, Cheonan. The writer ordered honey Kirin beer, Asahi draft beer and the recommended five-meat yakitori set, served over a candle that keeps the skewers warm. The green onion chicken skewer was the best of the set and earned a second order. Torikichi Cheongdang is an easy neighborhood spot for skewers and a draft beer after dinner.

Danyang bakery, quiet shop, fluffy rolls: Black Garlic Salt Bread

Black Garlic Salt Bread is a salt bread bakery inside Gugyeong Market in Danyang, Chungbuk, best known for its signature roll filled with a sauce made from black garlic aged in-house. The writer found Black Garlic Salt Bread quieter than the nearby dakgangjeong (sweet crispy fried chicken) and garlic bread shops, picked up Original Set 1 and Set 2 right away, and tried the black garlic, garlic and plain salt bread. The black garlic salt bread, a flavor hard to find elsewhere, was the clear favorite, and the handled bag with individually wrapped rolls made it an easy Danyang travel gift.

Gangneung gift shop, skip the market: persimmon sand—Gangneung Sand

Gangneung Sand Main Branch is a souvenir dessert shop in a white-and-blue standalone building on Seonggokgoyang-gil in Gangneung, Gangwon. The writer had only ever bought Gangneung Sand cookies at the market, but this time picked up the coffee and dried persimmon (gotgam) flavors to go from the main branch and enjoyed the buttery flavor and the chewy dried persimmon at home. With roomy parking and none of the market crowds, Gangneung Sand Main Branch is a relaxed place to choose Gangneung travel gifts.

Pyeongtaek cockle restaurant, pancakes re-fried at home: Kkomak Manse

Kkomak Manse Pyeongtaek Manse-ro Main Branch is a cockle restaurant on Manse-ro in the Sosabeol area of Pyeongtaek, Gyeonggi, that cooks with fresh live cockles. The writer, who dislikes fishy seafood, drove 15 minutes from Starfield Anseong to try soy-marinated cockle bibimbap, Beolgyo cockle pancakes and cockle dumplings, then took the 2 leftover pancakes home and re-fried them in a pan. With big, fresh cockles and no fishy taste, all three dishes at Kkomak Manse were a hit, and the writer is 100% sure to return.

Beomgye Station pasta with Mom and a mustard dip: Two Find Peter

Two Find Peter Beomgye Branch is a dimly lit Western restaurant on the 5th floor of Park Avenuel near Beomgye Station in Anyang, Gyeonggi. The writer and her mother ordered a Caesar salad with 3 extra chicken tenders, a pollock roe oil pasta and an abalone innards cream pasta, and all three dishes were delicious; the spacious hall and large tables also draw plenty of group diners. For pasta with sauce that clings richly to the noodles and a generous salad, Two Find Peter Beomgye Branch is a good choice.
