Jeju Dongmun Market sushi & sashimi takeout, no touts: Dutumhoe
In short
Dutumhoe Dongmun Market Main Branch is a sashimi and sushi takeout shop in the Gate 8 night market alley of Dongmun Market in Jeju. The writer took home assorted sushi for 12,000 won, flatfish and salmon sashimi for 25,000 won and 8 coconut fried shrimp for 10,000 won, and found the flatfish, salmon and amberjack sashimi thick-cut, just as the Dutumhoe name promises, with crispy fried shrimp alongside. If you like thick-cut sashimi, Dutumhoe is a satisfying choice for sashimi takeout at Dongmun Market.

Dutumhoe Dongmun Market Main Branch, where the thickness of the sashimi hits you first

Dongmun Market has such a variety of food that lots of people stop by to pack up several different things and eat them later.

On my first visit to Dongmun Market in a while, I went to Dutumhoe (두툼회), where you can take away sashimi and sushi.
Where is Dutumhoe Dongmun Market Main Branch?
Dutumhoe Dongmun Market Main Branch is in the night market alley by Gate 8 of Dongmun Market, Jeju (16 Gwandeok-ro 14-gil, Jeju-si, Jeju). It is open daily from 11:30 to 21:00, you can use the public parking lot, and it is a cold-packing takeout specialist.
The big blue sign is easy to spot. I especially liked that nobody tries to pull you in as you walk by. Dutumhoe is a takeout shop for sashimi and sushi. Besides those, the coconut shrimp tempura is super popular too!
What does Dutumhoe sell, and how much does it cost?

Dutumhoe sells a wider range than I expected, from sushi and futomaki (thick sushi rolls) to sashimi, and even the same item comes in different bundles, so choosing is half the fun.

The basic sashimi is ₩25,000, and perhaps because the sea is so close, it was cheap for the amount. Amberjack, which is just starting to come into season, was sliced and sold too, so the sashimi with amberjack caught my eye.

I agonized over what to pick for a long time, and in the end I ordered three items.
- Assorted sushi ₩12,000
- Flatfish and salmon sashimi ₩25,000
- Coconut shrimp tempura, 8 pieces, ₩10,000

I ordered the coconut shrimp tempura as if in a trance because of the smell, and I would have regretted it if I hadn't.

A few people were waiting in front of the shrimp tempura, so curiosity got me to order it, and it was a total success, I tell you! haha
Is Dutumhoe's sashimi really thick-cut?
The assorted sashimi at Dutumhoe held flatfish, salmon and amberjack, and it was definitely cut thick. Since the shop is literally called "thick sashimi," the thickness was what I was looking forward to most!

The assorted sashimi I ordered was thick, so I could really feel the texture with each piece.

If you like sashimi with a chew like I do, this thickness should suit your taste. Flatfish, salmon and amberjack each have a different texture and flavor, so alternating between them never got boring.

If you are choosing sashimi at Dongmun Market and prefer thick slices over thin ones, check out Dutumhoe Dongmun Market Main Branch.
How was Dutumhoe's assorted sushi?

The assorted sushi (₩12,000) lets you try several kinds of sushi, so it went well alongside the assorted sashimi. Just note that the sushi has no wasabi inside, so make sure to bring some along and add it yourself~
Personally, I prefer a setup where the flavor and texture of the fish stand out more than the rice, and with the sushi the rice felt relatively prominent. (This is personal taste, so please keep that in mind.)

I'm told the shop mainly insists on fresh wild-caught fish from Jeju fishermen, and the plus is that I really didn't notice any fishy smell or off taste.
Is Dutumhoe's coconut fried shrimp worth ordering?

Dutumhoe's coconut shrimp tempura is ₩10,000 for 8 pieces, and I would have regretted skipping it. The coconut aroma in the batter was strong.

The shrimp were big, and even though it was takeout, the crunch was still there.

The two sauces they included suited my taste too, though this is a dish that would have been even better eaten on the spot rather than taken away. Next time I visit a Dongmun Market sashimi shop, I'll definitely eat the coconut shrimp again.
How long does cold packing keep Dongmun Market sashimi fresh?
Dutumhoe packs your order with a cooler bag and ice, which was plenty for a 1–2 hour trip. It is a specialty takeout shop for sashimi and sushi inside Jeju's Dongmun Market, so ask them to pack it so it is easy to eat at the beach or your accommodation.

Dutumhoe left an impression with sashimi sliced thick just as its name says, and it is a good place to go when you can't decide on Dongmun Market sashimi takeout.
