Following the scent of bread to Gugyeong Market during a Danyang trip

While traveling around Danyang, I made sure to see the sights, but I absolutely could not give up the fun of tracking down good food, haha. So this is where I went—ta-da~~

Danyang Gugyeong Market!! From garlic-based specialties to dakgangjeong (sweet crispy fried chicken), dumplings, bread, and more, Danyang Gugyeong Market had so many delicious things to browse. It was such fun, haha.

One place in particular caught my eye!! It was selling black garlic salt bread, something you do not see every day. I had come all the way to Danyang and there was black garlic salt bread... how could I resist?! So I headed straight to Black Garlic Salt Bread (흑마늘소금빵) inside Gugyeong Market, haha.

I was wandering around the market looking at this and that when I caught that nutty bread smell from way off in the distance... Wait, what is that smell...?! Even when I tried to walk past, the gorgeous aroma stopped me right in my tracks!! I followed it and there it was: Black Garlic Salt Bread!!

Garlic is one of Danyang's signature local specialties, so Gugyeong Market had lots of unusual garlic foods. But black garlic in salt bread...?! I had never seen that combination before, which made it even more intriguing, haha.

The shop says it follows a make-it-today, sell-it-today policy. They knead the dough and bake every day, so I guess there was a reason that lovely nutty scent was wafting out from the front of the shop, haha.

And beside it, there was even a separate black garlic aging room~ The black garlic ages in the rice cookers right in front of you, with every day of the aging process marked out. I found it so fascinating that I stood there looking for ages, haha.

Okay, okay!! Now it was time for the most important part: checking out the menu, right?!

In addition to original salt bread, Black Garlic Salt Bread had four varieties in total: black garlic salt bread, garlic salt bread, and soboro salt bread, too! There were set menus as well, from a set of four originals to mixed garlic and black garlic selections. They looked great for sharing with a group or taking home as gifts, haha.

But the problem was... every single one looked delicious. They had original, garlic, black garlic, and soboro varieties all lined up, and I had no idea what to choose...

Especially seeing those salt breads, looking as if they had just come out of the oven, all neatly lined up—choosing only one was completely impossible. So without another thought!! I ordered the Original Set and Set 2! Why did I even deliberate if I was going to do that? I do not know either... haha.

Trying the original and black garlic flavors at the pension

All neatly packed up!! They packed everything cleanly in a handled bag, so it was easy to carry around during our Danyang trip. It also seemed perfect to take home for family snacks or travel gifts! So if you are searching for good food at Danyang Gugyeong Market but want a light market snack or dessert rather than a full meal, this could be a nice stop.

We opened the package as soon as we got back to the pension~ Honestly, I had wanted to eat them from the moment I smelled them at the market, so it had been hard to wait.... haha.

Then I took a bite... and would you look at that...? It was so goodㅠㅠㅠㅠ

The outside had that signature nutty salt-bread flavor, while the inside was soft, so I kept reaching for more than I expected. I tried the original first, and the rich buttery flavor really came through—I just kept going back for it, haha.

And then, the black garlic salt bread I had been most curious about!! Just from the name, I wondered, “What if the garlic flavor is too strong...?” But it was much less intense than I expected, so I really enjoyed it, haha. It had a charm quite different from regular salt bread, and I thought, if you have come all the way to Danyang, you have to try this once. Since it is not something you can easily find elsewhere, it stayed with me even more!

Even the soboro had its own appeal, so if it is your first visit like mine, I personally recommend trying a mixed set with several varieties!

We definitely bought quite a lot... but as we ate, I kept thinking, why did we not buy more...? haha. They were seriously so delicious that I was genuinely considering stopping by Gugyeong Market again to buy more on the way home. There is nothing happier than finding something delicious while traveling... is that just me?! haha.

If you are planning a trip to Danyang, do not just visit the tourist sights—make sure to stop by food-filled Gugyeong Market, too, haha. Especially if you already love salt bread, it makes for an even more fun food stop because you can try everything from garlic salt bread to black garlic salt bread, flavors that are not easy to come by!
