Korean BBQ in Gangnam with salt-and-wasabi giwatsal: Sansol

Sansol Sinnonhyeon is an aged pork BBQ restaurant near Exit 3 of Sinnonhyeon Station in Gangnam, Seoul. The giwatsal (roof-tile cut) and kkodeulsal (chewy jowl cut) kept a bouncy, firm texture, and salt with wasabi was the cleanest-tasting way to eat them, while the banchan and doenjang jjigae (soybean paste stew) at Sansol Sinnonhyeon leaned sweet enough to divide opinion. The downdraft grill was the best part, leaving far less smoke smell on clothes.

Isu Station udon restaurant with scissor-cut long noodles: Kosi Isu

Kosi Isu Branch is a house-made udon and tonkatsu restaurant about 119m from Exit 9 of Isu Station in Dongjak, Seoul. At dinner the tenbukkake udon set with tempura arrived in a bowl as wide as a basin, and the noodles were so long they had to be cut with scissors, served alongside a mixed katsu plate. Between the cold bukkake udon and the thick tonkatsu, Kosi Isu Branch served more than enough for two.

Sindang Chinese restaurant open until 2am: Lucky Dragon JCB

Lucky Dragon JCB Sindang is a Chinese-style izakaya a short walk from Exit 4 of Sindang Station in Jung-gu, Seoul, serving until 2am. The order was char siu chahan (char siu fried rice), mapo tofu, chuka soba and a 125ml bottle of Yantai Special, putting rice, noodles and a main dish on one table; the mapo tofu was hot enough to raise a sweat and was the most memorable plate.
