Mapo Korean BBQ lunch for 3, staff grill and leave: Moyeon Mapo
In short
Moyeon Mapo (모연 마포본점) is a hanwoo (Korean beef) restaurant with all private rooms in Yonggang-dong, near Mapo Station Exit 1 in Seoul. On a weekday Thursday lunch without a reservation, the writer waited 30 minutes, then ordered the charcoal-grilled marinated hanwoo and pot rice set for 3 people (75,000 won). Staff grilled the beef over charcoal inside the room, plated it and stepped out, which made easy conversation possible. Moyeon Mapo is a Mapo beef restaurant that suits days when you need a proper lunch, such as family gatherings or hosting guests.

You know those weekday lunches when you suddenly think, "Today I want to eat properly!" haha. So I went to Moyeon Mapo (모연 마포본점), a hanwoo (Korean beef) dining spot near Mapo Station. Every seat is a private room, so it's perfect for a family gathering with your parents or a lunch for hosting guests. I went without a reservation and waited 30 minutes, but the moment the food came out I forgot all about it lol
Moyeon Mapo location, hours and parking
Moyeon Mapo is on the 1st floor of the Yeongu Building, 318 Tojeong-ro, Mapo-gu, Seoul, and opens at 11:30 Tuesday to Saturday. Closing time is 21:30–21:50 depending on the day, break time is 15:00–17:00, and lunch last order is 14:00. It's closed every Sunday and Monday, and valet parking is available in front of the Mapo public parking lot behind the building.
It's a 4-minute walk from Mapo Station (Line 5) Exit 1. The address is Yonggang-dong, so it's also handy for lunch plans around Gongdeok and Yonggang-dong.

This is the front entrance on the ground floor of the Yeongu Building, on the Tojeong-ro side. It looks clean and tidy from the outside.

This is the back door, behind the building. If you come by car, the sign says you can hand your keys to the valet in front of the public parking lot behind the building. The first thing I noticed when I walked in was how clean everything is, from the outside to the inside.

This is the counter at the entrance. Moyeon accepts Onnuri gift vouchers, so if you have some, bring them along.

What are the private rooms at Moyeon Mapo like?
Every seat at Moyeon Mapo is a private room, and ours even had a hanger for hanging up your coat. My favorite thing was exactly that: all-private rooms. You can chat comfortably without worrying about the next table, so it'd be really good for hosting guests or a family gathering.
Each room reportedly has its own air conditioner and power outlet, and there were also comfort services listed: phone charging, lap blankets, hair ties, a baby chair and warming baby food. It should work for family gatherings with kids too, right?

Moyeon Mapo lunch special prices and ordering for 3
The lunch special at Moyeon Mapo, the charcoal-grilled marinated hanwoo and pot rice set, is ₩25,000, and the lunch sirloin and pot rice set is ₩48,000. The menu sits on a marble table with a charcoal brazier in the middle.
There's no ordering tablet here; each room has a bell, and staff come right away when you press it. We ordered the lunch special charcoal-grilled marinated hanwoo and pot rice set for 3. It's 120g per person and needs a minimum of 2 orders. For 3 people it came to ₩75,000, and considering the spread and the private room, that felt quite reasonable for a Mapo BBQ lunch.
Hanwoo marinated beef grilled right over charcoal

How long is the wait for a weekday lunch without a reservation?
I arrived around 11:50 on a Thursday without a reservation and waited about 30 minutes. Honestly I was pretty worn out waiting while hungry T_T But the moment the meat arrived I thought, "Ah, worth the wait!" lol

Staff grill the marinated hanwoo right on the charcoal in your room. They grill the meat themselves from start to finish,

See how gorgeous the meat looks? haha It's glossy charcoal-grilled marinated hanwoo. The seasoning isn't too strong, so you really taste the beef, with a light charcoal aroma on top, and it was so good. I later found out Moyeon uses steers under 28 months old, aged 500 hours. No wonder that even though it's marinated, it wasn't tough and got more tender the more I chewed.
Why I loved that staff grill and then leave
There's one more thing I liked at Moyeon Mapo. They grill the meat over the charcoal, plate it up nicely, and slip out haha. When a staff member keeps standing next to you, the conversation somehow goes quiet, right? Since they just grill in front of you and leave, it was much easier to chat away while eating.
Butter pot rice and the abalone jang tip
The Moyeon Mapo lunch special comes with butter-topped pot rice alongside the meat.

See the butter on top of the pot rice? Hehe~~ When you lift the lid, sweet potato, mushrooms, ginkgo nuts and more are colorfully arranged on top. It looked so delicious that I was happy before I even ate.
Scoop some rice out, add the butter and mix, and the nutty richness is just fantastic. They say the rice is Golden Queen No. 3, cooked in a cast-iron pot as soon as the order goes in. It was tasty even without butter, and now I get why. The bowls also looked special, and apparently they use works by the late ceramic artist Lee Se-yong along with bangjja yugi (traditional hammered brassware). That explains why the table setting looked so neat.

What comes in the individual set?
The pot rice set at Moyeon Mapo is served as an individual banjang (set meal). Each person gets their own pot rice, doenjang-jjigae (soybean paste stew), jeonbok-jang (soy-marinated abalone), jangjorim (soy-braised beef), namul (seasoned vegetables) and white kimchi.

Since everything comes separately for each person, it seems great for eating neatly even at a hosting occasion.
It tastes much better if you add the abalone soy sauce!
And here's the real tip! A staff member quietly told me while grilling the meat. I added a spoonful of the abalone jang soy sauce to my butter bibimbap-style rice, and wow, that was a real tip. So good lol. The abalone was fresh too, and even the innards weren't fishy at all.
Side dishes and buckwheat tea

The basic banchan (side dishes) at Moyeon Mapo include seasoning sauces and jang like perilla leaf pesto, kimchi and jangajji (pickles). Of course they give you more when you finish! There's plenty to eat with the meat,

wrap it in gim (seaweed)~ wrap it in cabbage! Or eat it as is! lol And even the water was buckwheat tea, which they say helps digestion. Little details like this made me feel really well looked after haha
