Korean BBQ in Gwangmyeong Sageori with a garlic oil dip: Seoseo Galbi
In short
Gwangmyeong Seoseo Galbi is a local charcoal-grilled galbi restaurant on Gwangi-ro at Gwangmyeong Sageori in Gwangmyeong, Gyeonggi. The writer walked in as the first customer at 5:30 pm on a weekday and ordered 2 servings of pork galbi, 1 serving of seoseo galbi, mul naengmyeon (cold noodles) and rice, and the owner of Gwangmyeong Seoseo Galbi brought out a separate oil dip after seeing garlic on the grill. Verdict: the icy ₩5,000 mul naengmyeon is a must-order alongside the galbi.

Today I visited Gwangmyeong Seoseo Galbi (광명서서갈비), a local favorite near Gwangmyeong Sageori 😋 It had been a while since I'd gnawed on galbi, so my heart was pounding .!.!!!!

You can smell that this is a good place right from the entrance 👃👃👃 I came a long way, 40 minutes by bus, so I went in full of expectations haha

Weekday 5:30 pm visit: was there a wait?
I got to Gwangmyeong Seoseo Galbi around 5:30 pm on a weekday and I was the very first one haha But from 6 pm, a lot of people suddenly showed up!
There were 4 sofa booths for four and about 10 tables. When I walked in, the owner showed me to the coolest seat! Little things like that are reasons to come back 🤤 There might be a wait, so I'd recommend making a reservation :))
Gwangmyeong Seoseo Galbi menu and prices
The menu has only four kinds of galbi: seoseo galbi 200g for ₩22,000, beef short rib 150g for ₩20,000, pork galbi 200g for ₩16,000, and the new fresh pork galbi (saengpo galbi) 180g for ₩25,000.
- Seoseo galbi 200g ₩22,000
- Beef short rib (sosaenggalbi) 150g ₩20,000
- Pork galbi 200g ₩16,000
- Fresh pork galbi (saengpo galbi) 180g ₩25,000

A simple menu: seoseo galbi, beef short rib, pork galbi and the new fresh pork galbi, four kinds in total :)) You know a place with a short menu is the real deal, right??!! I hadn't noticed, but the weights differ. From cheapest: pork galbi > seoseo (beef) galbi > beef short rib > fresh pork galbi!

Side dishes
The side dishes are seasoned raw crab (yangnyeom gejang), cubed radish kimchi (kkakdugi), pickled onions, scallion soy sauce, shredded scallions, cabbage salad, lettuce, garlic and ssamjang (dipping paste)‼️ They give you loads of garlic too, so generous haha
Ordering 2 servings of pork galbi and 1 of seoseo galbi
At Gwangmyeong Seoseo Galbi I ordered 2 servings of pork galbi for ₩32,000, 1 serving of seoseo galbi for ₩22,000, cold noodles for ₩5,000 and 2 bowls of rice for ₩2,000.
- Pork galbi, 2 servings ₩32,000
- Seoseo galbi, 1 serving ₩22,000
- Cold noodles, 1 bowl ₩5,000
- Rice, 2 bowls ₩2,000

First I ordered one serving each of pork galbi and seoseo galbi. Seoseo galbi on the left, pork galbi on the right! I grilled the pork galbi first, and

Seoseo galbi vs pork galbi
The difference I noticed: the pork galbi had a bit more fat. Buuut, on the parts without fat, the pork galbi was more my taste. Anyway, meat grilled over charcoal is never bad, right?

But the seoseo galbi was tasty too. Around the time I grilled it, a stew came out, kind of like doenjang soup? It seems to come as a freebie, and it went so well with the rice

Anyway, we couldn't feel a big difference, so we added one more serving of the cheaper pork galbi haha Reason: no money

The look of it is insane •• Though not every piece comes on the rib bone, it seems. Out of 3 servings there was only one bone. Good, right?!!? But for me, who loves gnawing on ribs, it was a teeny bit disappointing,, 🤣🤣🤣
Oh, and when the owner saw us grilling garlic on the grill, he prepared dipping oil (gireumjang) for us!! So thoughtful. If you plan to grill garlic, you could ask for it from the start.
Dessert cold noodles for ₩5,000
And now the grand finale: cold noodles (mul naengmyeon). They're ₩5,000 at Gwangmyeong Seoseo Galbi, and taste like proper barbecue-restaurant naengmyeon, with icy slush in the broth.

This one was crazy good •• At lunch the cafeteria served arrowroot cold noodles (chik naengmyeon) with a texture somewhere between wheat noodles and naengmyeon... neither one nor the other, so I couldn't eat it, threw it all away, and was so annoyed ㅠ This bowl fixed my mood.. exactly the barbecue-restaurant naengmyeon I like haha Icy naengmyeon with galbi is a insane combo. You must order it. The portion is just right for one person as dessert?!

And if you run out of side dishes, you can refill at the self-serve bar !! hahaha
Overall verdict
Today's verdict: if you're looking for a friendly local barbecue restaurant near Gwangmyeong Sageori, I recommend Gwangmyeong Seoseo Galbi !!
