Euljiro snack bar for catching up with a friend: Hyeonseoni-ne

Hyeonseoni-ne Cheonggye Instant Branch is an old-school snack bar near Euljiro 1-ga Station, on the Cheonggyecheon side of Jung-gu, Seoul. Meeting a friend after six months, the writer ordered the Hyeonseoni combo — tteokbokki (spicy rice cakes), sundae (blood sausage), fried snacks, gimbap (seaweed rice roll) and fish cake together — for 25,000 won, and rated the odor-free sundae and liver and the light, non-greasy fritters highest. With strong air conditioning, Hyeonseoni-ne delivers the street tent-bar mood without the summer heat.

Mix Katsu A and cold udon for two in Yeonnam-dong: Katsu Monster

Katsu Monster Yeonnam Main Branch is a tonkatsu, udon and soba restaurant in Yeonnam-dong, near Hongik University Station in Mapo, Seoul. After walking from Sinchon to Yeonnam-dong to browse popup events, two diners shared a Mix Katsu A and a cold udon: the loin katsu was crisp with no gamey smell, and the cheese katsu was chewy and savory. The cold udon noodles were springy enough to beat the heat, and one katsu plate plus one udon was plenty for two.
