Mapo aged hanwoo restaurant: pumpkin pot rice lunch at Moyeon Mapo

In short

Moyeon Mapo (모연 마포본점) is an aged hanwoo (Korean beef) restaurant near the Yonggang-dong meat alley in Mapo, Seoul, a 5-minute walk from Mapo Station Exit 1. From the lunch specials, the writer ordered the charcoal-grilled marinated hanwoo & pot rice set and the lunch sirloin & pot rice set, which came with pumpkin, ginkgo and bean pot rice, doenjang (soybean paste) stew, soy-marinated abalone, and kelp and seaweed wraps. With private rooms and a neatly laid Korean spread, Moyeon Mapo is a strong pick for hosting guests or family gatherings.

I visited Moyeon Mapo (모연 마포본점), a premium Korean restaurant near the Yonggang-dong meat alley in Mapo, where you can enjoy a neat full-table spread and top-grade hanwoo in private! From the clean interior to the modern private rooms, the tidy side dishes, the carefully made pot rice and the deeply flavored aged hanwoo, everything was perfect, so I really recommend it for hosting guests or family gatherings.

Moyeon Mapo is on the 1st floor of the Yeongu Building at 318 Tojeong-ro, Mapo-gu, Seoul, a 5-minute walk from Mapo Station Exit 1. It is open Tuesday to Saturday, 11:30-21:50, with a break from 15:00 to 17:00 and last orders at 14:00 and 20:50.

It's well known as a Gongdeok barbecue spot and a Mapo beef restaurant. If you drive, you can use the restaurant's parking spaces, and valet is available too, so it should be easy to visit!

Moyeon Mapo exterior and room atmosphere

The exterior caught my eye with its modern brick wall and sleek black signboard. It felt upscale and tidy from the entrance, which suits a formal meal very well. I also trusted it more because it has reportedly won a Blue Ribbon six years in a row.

Inside, the calm, warm wood tones and elegant marble tables gave off the class of a high-end Korean restaurant. There are neatly separated private rooms, so we could eat comfortably.

Moyeon Mapo lunch specials: what we ordered

On weekday and weekend daytime visits, Moyeon Mapo offers reasonably priced lunch special grill sets. I ordered these two:

  • Charcoal-grilled marinated hanwoo & pot rice set
  • Lunch sirloin & pot rice set

Side dishes served on a small tray

Once we sat down and ordered, the staff carefully set out side dishes neatly arranged on a cute little tray (soban). Colorful vegetables like bell pepper, carrot, chili, wrap cabbage and kelp came prepped, along with a special doenjang (soybean paste) sauce.

Neatly plated white kimchi, tender soy-braised abalone, jangjorim (soy-braised beef), spinach and shredded dried squid came out too.

Pumpkin, ginkgo and bean pot rice with doenjang stew: how was it?

The nutritious pot rice at Moyeon Mapo is carefully topped with sweet pumpkin, ginkgo nuts, beans and more, and a nutty rice aroma rose as soon as I lifted the lid. The doenjang stew served alongside was also rich and savory, and delicious.

Top the freshly cooked pot rice with the tender, chewy soy-braised abalone and a pat of butter, mix it all up, and your mouth fills with rich nuttiness and the sweet-salty savoriness of the sauce.

Put butter pot rice, mushrooms and the special seasoned sauce on fresh kelp and eat it in one bite, and you get a subtle scent of the sea along with the nuttiness of the rice.

Wrap butter pot rice, namul (seasoned greens) and ssamjang (dipping sauce) in fragrant gim (seaweed), and behind the crisp seaweed texture the nutty, spicy seasoning blends into a rich savoriness.

Lunch sirloin: do the staff grill it for you?

Yes, the staff at Moyeon Mapo grill the lunch sirloin for you. The tightly packed marbling in the lean meat made it obvious at a glance that this is high-grade hanwoo, and it turned golden brown with a nutty meaty aroma.

Cooked just right, one bite was tender and burst with juices, and dipping it in salt amplified the savoriness.

The charcoal-grilled marinated beef at Moyeon Mapo isn't overpowering; the mildly sweet-salty marinade soaked deep into the meat. Eat it with the fresh, crunchy garlic chive salad (buchu muchim) served alongside and it never feels greasy.

If you're looking for properly grilled hanwoo near Mapo, or a place for a cozy gathering with people who matter to you, Moyeon Mapo should give you a satisfying, no-fail meal.
