Inside Kkankkanhan Jokbal: a wide hall that seats groups

Gwangju's jokbal spot (a Yongbong-dong bar for get-togethers), Kkankkanhan Jokbal Yongbong Branch, inside. The hall was more spacious than it looked from outside, and the tables had plenty of room. You might picture a jokbal place as cramped with tables packed close together, but this one looked totally fine for a group of friends to sit down and eat comfortably :) In the evening especially there were a lot of guests having drinks with their jokbal, so it really suits anyone looking for a Yongbong-dong bar 🍻🫧

What jokbal dishes are on the menu?

You can pick from charcoal-grilled jokbal, spicy jokbal, half-and-half jokbal, and more, plus side dishes that pair well with jokbal like bibim makguksu (spicy cold buckwheat noodles) and eomuk soup!

What we ordered: old-style king jokbal for 41,000 won

  • Old-style king jokbal (₩41,000)
  • Tom's Zero (₩2,000)
  • Flying fish roe rice ball from a Naver receipt review

The old-style king jokbal is probably the tastiest thing at Kkankkan (totally subjective, though). The thinly sliced king jokbal is straight-up the definition of a can't-go-wrong dish, haha.

Table setting with the ordered old-style king jokbal
Neatly arranged basic side dishes
Tom's Zero soda on the table
Ice served in a small bowl

Along with the neatly arranged basic side dishes, the Tom's Zero arrived too! If you ask for an ice cup, they'll scoop ice into a little bowl like this for you haha. You definitely don't want to skip the zero-sugar soda with your jokbal~~~

Complimentary eomuk soup served with the meal

The free soup at Kkankkanhan Jokbal is eomuk soup

Oh right — the free soup that comes with your order at Kkankkan's Yongbong branch is eomuk soup 🍢, and once it's boiling hot, it puts your average street-cart fish cake broth to shame... Honestly this is exactly why the Yongbong branch is my favorite among all the Kkankkan locations...

The fish cake skewers are chewy and so delicious... I like my fish cake really plump and soaked, so I left it in as long as possible before eating, haha.

How does the thinly sliced old-style king jokbal taste?

Finally, the jokbal I ordered showed up! The glossy, shiny visual alone got my mouth watering... hahaha 🤤 There's really something about seeing jokbal the moment it lands on the table. Like I mentioned above, this thinly sliced style of king jokbal has its own particular charm.

Gwangju's jokbal spot (a Yongbong-dong bar for get-togethers), Kkankkanhan Jokbal Yongbong Branch's old-style king jokbal (₩41,000), medium size. Being the old-style version, it had a familiar, homey feel, and it's a dish anyone who likes a chewy jokbal texture could enjoy without hesitation!!! Pick up a piece of jokbal, put it on a lettuce wrap with ssamjang (dipping sauce), and that combo never fails... 💕 It's tasty with a light dip in shrimp salt too, and tasty wrapped up in lettuce, or even topped with dried radish for a chewy bite >< ha

Write a Naver receipt review, get a flying fish roe rice ball

One more thing I loved! There's an event where writing a Naver receipt review gets you a flying fish roe rice ball, so we joined in too 😊 When you're eating jokbal, it's nice to have some rice on the side instead of just meat the whole time, right?! So having the flying fish roe rice ball alongside made the meal surprisingly filling. They loaded it up with flying fish roe and roasted seaweed flakes, so this alone was already delicious, haha.

My personal favorite way was wrapping the flying fish roe rice ball together with pickled radish!!! Between the jokbal, the soda, and the rice ball combo, the table was emptying out before I knew it, hehe. This right here is what happiness at a good restaurant looks like~~~
