Date night with my partner in Sinbu-dong after a while! haha, a date without drinks is unthinkable for us. Tonight's menu was decided: frozen pork belly. So we headed to "Sampyeong Sikdang," famous as a frozen pork belly spot near Cheonan Terminal 🐷. It turned out to be exactly the place when you want frozen pork belly with a drink in Sinbu-dong! Let's get into the review, haha.

Is there a wait at Sampyeong Sikdang?

Even though Sampyeong Sikdang Cheonan Sinbu Branch stays open until late, there was a line during peak hours 👀!! We got lucky and walked straight in without waiting, but right after we sat down a queue formed behind us... No wonder it's known as the frozen pork belly spot near Cheonan Terminal 👌🏻.

Sampyeong Sikdang menu and what the sets include

The signature menu at this Cheonan Terminal favorite includes frozen pork belly, frozen pork neck, and frozen flower pork belly. There's also Sampyeong's own unique dish, Sampyeong Samhap — a Yeosu-style samhap (three-way combo) of octopus, shrimp, and pork stir-fried together in a spicy sauce 🔥! For those who want a bit of everything, there are set menus too: frozen pork belly + small dirty egg custard + a side dish, available in 2–3 person and 3–4 person sizes 👏🏻.

The sides are pretty varied so you can pick according to taste! You can choose from dirty egg custard, doenjang jjigae, doenjang sul-bap (soybean paste rice with alcohol), spicy kimchi stew, perilla oil mak-guksu (cold buckwheat noodles), naengmyeon, palgo bibimmyeon, fried rice, cheese add-on, mushroom add-on, or minari add-on ‼️

The basic side dishes came out neat and clean, one by one, haha. Corn salad, ssamjang (dipping sauce), sesame oil salt, fresh wasabi, aged kimchi, garlic stalks, ssammu (radish wraps), wrap vegetables, cheongyang chili, green onion strips, and minari! A wide variety of sides that go great with the meat, so it was fun mixing and matching according to taste :D

Frozen pork belly in the 2–3 person set

We ordered the 2–3 person set: frozen pork belly + small dirty egg custard + a side dish ✨. For the side we picked our favorite, doenjang sul-bap, and of course a bottle of soju to go with it, haha. The frozen pork belly was first grilled by a staff member! Once it was grilled to a good point, we grilled the rest ourselves, which was convenient 🙌🏻.

Next came the bomb-style egg custard 🐣. Even though it was the small size included in the "Sampyeong Sikdang" set, it was still quite generous — about the same amount you'd normally see as a side at a regular grill house, haha!!!

It didn't feel small at all — the egg custard puffed up soft and fluffy, mild and savory-salty, just plain delicious! A meal would feel incomplete without egg custard as a side, haha.

Doenjang sul-bap: the best match for soju

The doenjang sul-bap was completely hearty, through and through 🍚. It felt like it was curing the hangover as we drank, haha. You'd think you'd want more carbs while drinking, and a sip of soju with a spoonful of doenjang sul-bap was the ultimate drinking snack...

This Cheonan Terminal favorite keeps refilling the frozen pork belly .ᐟ .ᐟ. The staff grill the first round, then you take over grilling yourself. You could also grill garlic, minari, and aged kimchi alongside to taste, which was great, haha 🔥.

Finishing with mul-naengmyeon (cold buckwheat noodles)

Finishing off with icy mul-naengmyeon (cold noodle soup) topped with slushy ice, cool and refreshing to clean the palate, and that wrapped up our tasty Sinbu-dong date! A satisfying Sinbu-dong date with my partner, enjoying good frozen pork belly and soju after a while, haha.
