I wanted to learn boxing, but I hesitated because I did not know how to set up the basic stance. Rather than following videos on my own, I wanted hands-on form corrections, so I went to Seongrok Boxing Gym (성록복싱짐) in Wondang.

Where is Seongrok Boxing Gym?
The gym was on the third floor of a building at 819 Hoguk-ro, Deogyang-gu, Goyang. A banner on the outside of the building highlighted prizes from community sports boxing competitions.

What were the training space and parking like?
When I went up to the third floor, the training area was more spacious than I expected. There were several heavy bags and a boxing ring. The high ceiling and good ventilation made it feel comfortable while exercising.

At the time of my visit, workout clothes and personal lockers were provided free of charge. Underground parking was also free, which made the visit convenient.

How were the coaches and competitive activities introduced?
The gym was introduced as a place where coaches with professional and elite boxing experience teach directly. A poster on the wall also announced that one of its athletes would compete in a Korean middleweight title match. I looked forward to learning the basics in a place where athletes train and compete.

What do boxing beginners learn first in personal coaching?
My class began with the stance. The coach adjusted my foot position, weight distribution, and guard one by one. As my form was corrected, I was also told why each position mattered, so the movements were easier to understand than when I followed videos alone.

Next, I learned the basic strikes in order: jab, straight, and hook. I was corrected not only on how to extend my fists, but also on weight transfer through my feet, waist rotation, and elbow angle. The coach pointed things out immediately whenever my form was off, so I could see what I needed to fix. That was my favorite part of the personal coaching class.

How did I feel after the one-hour class?
Once I tried it myself, boxing felt like an exercise that uses my whole body, not just my arms. By the end of the one-hour class, I was soaked in sweat. Focusing on the movements also felt stress-relieving.

I was initially most concerned about the basic stance, but in this class I could receive immediate corrections from foot position through striking movements. I felt it would suit people like me who are starting boxing and want to learn their form one step at a time.
