Knee support for squats at the gym: Lifeclue Powerhold

In short

Lifeclue Powerhold Patella Knee Support is a knee support tested at a gym in Korea. My husband, who previously tore his cruciate ligament, wore it for incline walking and squats with the included muscle tape. Verdict: he liked the supportive feel below the knee and the easy fit.

My husband once tore his cruciate ligament while exercising, so one of his knees has always been on the weak side. When he started going back to the gym in March after taking a break, he looked for a knee support to wear while working out. We received the Lifeclue Powerhold Patella Knee Support and he tried it on this time.

What comes with the knee support?

When we opened the package, it contained the knee support itself, dedicated muscle tape, and a taping guide. It was a set that let him try the tape as well without having to prepare it separately.

The muscle tape adhered well to the skin and had a stretchy texture. The support's Velcro straps let him adjust the compression level to suit the thickness of his knee, while the silicone pad was structured to support the area below the knee.

What impressed me most was the texture of the silicone pad. It felt soft but had a firm springiness, too. It looked designed with breathability in mind, so I hoped it might make sweating during exercise feel less burdensome as well.

Is the taping and fitting process simple?

My husband looked at the included guide and quickly applied the muscle tape along the curve of his knee. He said the taping made his knee feel more firmly held in place.

He placed the silicone pad below the patella and pulled the straps tight to secure the support. The fitting process was simple, and he said it gave him a reassuringly stable feeling around his knee.

How did it feel for incline walking at the gym?

We went to the gym to check how it felt to wear. He started with the mountain-climbing machine that he and I use often.

Because it involves walking at an increased incline, my husband would usually feel unstable when his knee had weight on it. This time, he tried walking while wearing the support.

He said that the support underneath his knee reduced the wobbling and made it feel held in place even when he put weight on it. He normally says his knee starts to ache after just 20 minutes on cardio equipment, but this time it seemed comparatively okay.

How did my husband find it during squats?

After finishing his cardio, he kept the support on and did squats. Since his old injury, his knee has tended to shake a little while he exercises.

Even from where I was watching, his knee seemed to move more steadily than before this time. He also said that it was comfortable because the support held his knee, and that the pain felt less noticeable. That was the change he felt during this workout while wearing both the tape and the support.

What my husband was especially pleased with was the supportive feeling below the knee and the simple way it went on. It made me think I would like to buy one and try it alongside him, too.
