Hongdae bakery for wine and beer breads, garlic baguette: Mandong

In short

Mandong Jegwa Yeonnam Branch is a street-front bakery in Seodaemun, Seoul, about a 10-minute walk from Hongik Univ. Station Exit 3 toward Yeonnam-dong. On one of her regular Hongdae and Yeonnam-dong visits, the writer took home the 7,000-won signature garlic baguette and went through the display breads one by one, sorting them into wine pairings, beer snacks, meal breads and treats. Verdict: Mandong Jegwa's dense, varied breads make it a more appealing Yeonnam-dong bakery than any franchise.

Where is Mandong Jegwa Yeonnam Branch near Hongdae?

Mandong Jegwa Yeonnam Branch (만동제과 연남점) sits on a big main road, about a 10-minute walk from Hongik Univ. Station Exit 3 toward Yeonnam-dong. It's my go-to Hongdae bakery whenever I come all the way out to Yeonnam-dong. Great value and a huge range of breads, so it's way more appealing than any franchise bakery, and this day I took home some tasty bread again haha.

With the shop name and the word "bread" (빵) written out huge like this, you can't miss it as long as your eyes are open.

Parking and which breads do you order at the counter?

The Mandong Jegwa branch has no parking of its own, so you'll need a nearby public car park. Five breads, the garlic baguette, onion bagel, basil tomato, cucumber baguette and cappuccino bread, shouldn't go on your tray. Tell the counter how many you want and they'll pack them for you, so keep that in mind!

The shop isn't big inside, but the display is packed with so many kinds of bread that you can find exactly what you're after. No wonder it's so popular as a stop on a Yeonnam-dong and Hongdae bakery tour.

How much is the signature garlic baguette at Mandong Jegwa?

The signature bread here is, of course, the garlic baguette (마늘바게트)!!!! The price has gone up to ₩7,000, but honestly, you won't find a garlic baguette this good anywhere else. So I end up buying it every single time! hahaha

Breads I eyed on the Mandong Jegwa shelves

Bagels, cappuccino bread and a pretzel for wine

The onion bagel and basil tomato are big round bagels stuffed with plenty of onion cream and basil tomato cream, so good! I haven't tried the cucumber baguette and honestly don't really want to.. haha. The cappuccino bread smells of coffee and goes really well with a strong americano. I wondered whether to put the fig campagne (country loaf) on my tray, but left it for next time!

The salty pretzel looks like a nice snack with wine, the kaya coconut has a pleasantly sweet coconut aroma, and I think the rusk is just right to take home as a snack.

Meal-style breads: rump bun and mugwort rice cake bread

The eongdeongi-ppang (엉덩이빵, "rump bun") has a lovely soft, squishy texture! The ssoktteok ssoktteok bread (쑥떡쑥떡빵, mugwort rice cake bread) is seriously heavy, and with the fragrant mugwort rice cake inside it seems better as a meal than a snack. With the injeolmi bread (인절미빵, roasted soybean powder rice cake bread) you'd have to watch your throat, and the chestnut red bean mugwort bread is one I've been debating since last time, so that's another one for next time!

Emmental bread and ciabatta to go with red wine

I bet the Mandong Jegwa Emmental bread, just lightly warmed in the microwave, is a perfect match for red wine!!!! The walnut bread is dotted with sweet walnuts and is delicious, and the jalapeño ciabatta looks like it'd be so good too T_T

The bacon ciabatta can't be anything but good, the maple bread probably has a lovely sweet maple syrup flavor, and I'm imagining the sweet potato bread tastes of sweet sweet potato mousse!

A must-try shrimp baguette and my parents' favorite yakbap bread

The Mandong Jegwa shrimp baguette is seriously so good, you have to try it!!! The ang cream (red bean paste and cream) bread is good too, and the yakbap bread (약밥브레드, sweet rice with nuts and jujube) is one of my mom and dad's favorites haha

Just look at the sweet pumpkin ciabatta, how could it not be good!! Next time I go to Mandong Jegwa it's going straight onto my tray, number one priority...!!!! The salt soboro (crumb-topped bun) and chestnut loaf are always-good steady sellers haha

Tortilla and chili sausage bread for beer

The Mandong Jegwa tortilla and chili sausage bread look like good beer snacks lol. The squid ink bread looks soft and sweet.

How do you heat up the Mandong Jegwa garlic baguette at home?

Give the Mandong Jegwa garlic baguette just a quick 20 seconds or so in the microwave and the garlic cream melts into a hot, gooey spread and the flavor really comes alive. Walking home with a heavy bag of bread! haha The bread itself is really dense, so I'm very happy with this Yeonnam-dong bakery.

As always, the Mandong Jegwa garlic baguette is good whenever you eat it!! It's packed with garlic cream, and I enjoyed it so, so much haha

Just a quick 20 seconds? in the microwave and the flavor of the hot, melting garlic cream really comes alive, that's Mandong Jegwa, my Yeonnam-dong bakery. I'll go again next time and pick up more tasty bread! hahaha
