No-break-time Jamsil pub for tangsuyuk and tendon hotpot: Wareureu

Today's post is about Wareureu Mansion Bangi Branch (와르르맨숀 방이점), a newly opened day-drinking spot in the Bangi-dong food alley in Jamsil.

There was a Uniqlo summer sale, so I got to shop happily for the first time in a while, and suddenly it was already 3pm. I was too hungry to wait until I got home, so I looked for a place with no break time in the Bangi Meokgol (Bangi food alley) right in front.

Wareureu Mansion Bangi Branch is open daily from 14:00 to 04:00 the next day, and it's a 5-minute walk from Exit 10 of Jamsil Station (Line 2). Paid parking is available, and the restrooms are separate for men and women.

It's a pub on the 2nd floor of the Twosome Place building in Bangi-dong. There's also an entrance if you turn into the alley just before you reach Twosome. (Right next to Nolsup Songpa-gu Office Branch.)

Don't feel like going around through the building? Then take the direct outdoor stairs. Right next to the Taegeukgi (Korean flag) there are stairs leading straight to Wareureu Mansion. They're quick but a little steep, so keep that in mind.

Inside, the ceilings are high and the tables are spaced widely, so it works for groups or dates, and the most popular seats were by the window. I went in through the building on the alley side and the first thing I met was the sofa seats at the back. As a brand-new Bangi-dong pub that has been open less than a month, it's really clean, and the lighting is soft without feeling stuffy. I loved it.

You can feel how spacious it is just from the photos. The ceilings are high and the tables are far apart, so it's great for groups and for dates. By far the most popular spot was the window seats.

True to the name "Wareureu Mansion" (a nod to Shin-chan's collapsing mansion), there are Shin-chan dolls here and there, and Shin-chan is playing on the screens on both sides. I'm not a particular fan and even I think it's cute, so if you love Shin-chan you'll adore it. It's not over the top either, so anyone can visit without feeling awkward.

The menu has hotpots, main dishes, pasta, pizza and more, a really, really (x100) wide variety, and you order by tablet at the table. From good-value meals to drinking snacks, the range of choices is huge.

Today's order was these two.

• Spicy beef shank and tendon hotpot (얼큰아롱사태스지전골)
• Handmade pork loin tangsuyuk (수제등심탕수육, sweet and sour pork)

Spicy beef shank and tendon hotpot: how much meat is in it?

Wareureu Mansion's spicy beef shank and tendon hotpot is packed with generous, thick pieces of shank and tendon, and the broth is a little spicy. I picked it because I wanted something spicy and filling. Since this is a Bangi-dong pub I didn't expect that much meat, but wow, plenty of shank, and tendon.

It's not just a large amount, the meat is truly thick. The tendon and shank are well simmered but not overcooked, so in your mouth they're so tender and chewy. It also comes loaded with vegetables like refreshing bean sprouts, napa cabbage and mushrooms.

One heads-up: true to the name "eolkeun" (spicy), the broth is a little hot.

Handmade pork loin tangsuyuk: pour-on or dipping?

Wareureu Mansion's handmade pork loin tangsuyuk has thin batter and thick meat, you can choose pour-on or dipping sauce on the table order screen, and sauce refills are available. The moment I saw it, my shoulders started dancing on their own. The tablet had a detailed description, but I don't remember exactly, haha. Anyway, it's really, really good.

It's not the usual kind of tangsuyuk where the meat is paper-thin and only the batter is thick. Exactly the opposite. The batter is thin and the meat is thick.

For pour-on or dipping, just press the order button to suit your taste. The sauce is sweet and has mushrooms I like (no idea what kind), and you can get a refill when it's gone. They also bring salt for dipping, so salt people, take note.

Wareureu Mansion Bangi Branch runs a happy hour where draft beer is just ₩100 from day-drinking time until early evening (until 7pm). It's not one per table either, it's available for up to 4 people, so whether it's a budget-friendly work dinner in the Jamsil Bangi food alley, a friends' get-together or a date.

Big portions make it enough for a first round

Every dish is big, so it's good for a second round, but Wareureu Mansion is also a perfect first-round pub in Jamsil Bangi-dong. I was with Mom, so we came for a meal more than drinks and even ordered a bowl of rice, but the dishes were so big I was glad we ordered only one.

A varied menu works even with picky friends

True to being a Korean pub (hansik jujeom), it has Korean meals, drinking snacks and sides, so even with a friend who's picky about food, ordering shouldn't be a problem.
