I visited Barirus (바리루스), a Paju café famous as a huge 1,200-pyeong bakery café with media art, and one of the top spots on any Paju trip list.

Where is Barirus in Paju, and what are its opening hours?

Barirus is on the 2nd floor at 245 Bongseosan-ro, Paju-eup, Paju, Gyeonggi, South Korea, and it's open Mon–Thu 10:00–21:00 and Fri–Sun 10:00–02:00. This Paju bakery café is packed with flashy media art and photo zones, and you can enjoy bakery items and brunch too, so it was a great pick for an indoor date in Paju.

The café is so big that its grand exterior stands out from far away. It's a nice stop on a Paju drive, and since you can stay comfortably even on a hot summer day or a rainy day, it worked really well as an indoor date in Paju.

Is parking free at Barirus?

Yes, parking at Barirus is free. This big Paju bakery café has a wide private parking lot in front, so we didn't have to worry about parking at all.

What is the Barirus media art photo zone like?

The first thing that catches your eye as you walk into Barirus is the media art space. The lights keep changing and create a moody atmosphere, and photos taken in front of it came out really pretty.

The grand media art at this Paju bakery café, staged together with smoke, feels like being at an exhibition. You get to enjoy the café and admire the media art at the same time, which makes it a good Paju date course.

There's also a big tree photo zone at the entrance, so the photo fun starts even before you go in. With lots of pretty photo spots all around the café, I think visitors on a Paju trip or on a date will be even happier with it :)

The high ceilings and open space hit me first. True to its 1,200-pyeong size, there are loads of seats, so you can spend time without feeling cramped, and it looked like a good place for family or group gatherings too.

The window seats let you enjoy the green nature view at your leisure, and they were popular photo spots as well.

The outdoor terrace is decorated in a camping style, giving a different mood from the indoor area.

Camping chairs and tables on the Barirus outdoor terrace

The camping seats on the terrace are nicely done down to the chairs and tables, a good spot for relaxing.

It was so hot the day we visited that we only took photos and came back inside, but in cool spring or autumn, or on a mild evening, I think the outdoor seats would be really nice for spending time.

What breads does Barirus sell?

The bakery selection is huge, and choosing is half the fun. Even though we went in the afternoon, bread kept being restocked, so we could grab warm, freshly baked pieces. Bread lovers will be happy here.

Besides the plain salt bread, there were many kinds of salt bread, such as the pollock roe mayo baguette salt bread and the scallion bacon salt bread.

The baguette and garlic naan are Barirus's signatures, and lots of people were picking up one of each. There was also sausage bread, panini, cinnamon rolls, levain cookies and palmier kkare, a proper variety for a big Paju bakery.

This is Barirus's signature castella cream bread, which I usually love. The soft castella and the not-too-sweet cream go together so well that it's the bread I personally recommend most.

On top of that, Barirus also had trendy popular breads like pandoro, croissants, Basque cheesecake and sandwiches.

Finally, no bakery café is complete without cake, and there was a wide choice of slice cakes, which was great :)

What we ordered: castella cream bread, palmier carré and ades

  • Bakery: castella cream bread, palmier kkare
  • Drinks: peach ade, mojito ade

My partner and I ordered castella cream bread, palmier kkare, peach ade and mojito ade at Barirus. They looked really pretty and every one of them satisfied us.

The peach ade I ordered, a Barirus signature, came with a round peach ice ball on top. As I drank, the ice slowly melted and turned the drink slushy, so I'd definitely recommend it for summer.

When I cut the castella cream bread in half, it was full of soft cream and so good. It's sweet without being overwhelming, which makes it perfect with coffee or ade.

Is Barirus in Paju a good indoor date café?

With its roomy space, media art, many photo zones, and tasty bakery items and drinks, Barirus was a really satisfying indoor date. If you're looking for a café in Paju where you can linger comfortably, I recommend visiting this Paju bakery café, Barirus :)
