Gunsan Korean BBQ restaurant: five-cut intestine set, Makchang

I went to Makchang Ilbeonji in Gunsan for some gopchang (beef small intestine). We ordered a set that comes with gopchang, makchang (beef large intestine), daechang, hongchang and yeomtong (heart), plus a hotpot to finish. Being able to try a bit of everything was really satisfying, so let me introduce this Gunsan gopchang restaurant!

Inside Makchang Ilbeonji: atmosphere and seating

Makchang Ilbeonji has a friendly, easygoing atmosphere that makes it comfortable to drop in for gopchang.

There were plenty of tables, so it looked like a good spot to visit with a group for drinks too. But most of all, the owner was really kind — taking care of us from start to finish, which made for a pleasant meal!

What comes with Makchang Ilbeonji Set A?

We ordered the Makchang Ilbeonji Set A. It comes with gopchang, makchang, daechang, hongchang and heart, plus a hotpot, so you can try several parts at once.

They grill each type separately on the plate, and watching everything sizzle away in the fat made me even hungrier.

As the meat browned in the fat rendered from the gopchang, that savory smell rose up and it was hard to wait.

Gopchang, daechang and makchang: how each cut tastes

As you'd expect from a Gunsan gopchang restaurant, I was most looking forward to the gopchang! One bite of the nicely browned gopchang and the savory gop (fat) inside burst right into my mouth. It's genuinely packed full of gop, so gopchang lovers will be satisfied! The heart was savory and delicious too, with a slightly crunchy texture that was really good!

Daechang had its own charm, different from the gopchang. When cooked just right, it was so soft that 'melts in your mouth' was exactly the right description. The savory, rich daechang flavor really came through, making it great to alternate with the gopchang. Makchang was appealing for its chewy texture — the more you chewed, the more the savory flavor came out, and it was fun to try the hongchang and heart one by one too. Ordering several parts together meant we could pick and choose by taste, so I'd recommend this set to anyone looking for a Gunsan gopchang restaurant!

And it doesn't end with just the grilled meat — the set also includes a hotpot. After eating our fill of savory, rich gopchang, finishing with a hot broth was the perfect combination.

Being able to go from grill to hotpot in one sitting made it a proper setup for drinks too!

Is Makchang Ilbeonji in Gunsan worth a visit?

From the gopchang packed full of gop, to the soft daechang, to the chewy makchang, Makchang Ilbeonji was delicious across the board! In particular, the gopchang grilled sizzling in fat had that savory burst of gop with every bite that was really something. Being able to eat several parts and finish with hotpot made for a hearty meal, and the owner was really kind too. They also run an affordable lunch special during the day, so if you're looking for a Gunsan gopchang restaurant, give it a visit!
