Open-window seats, bar counter and tables inside Hoyo Hongdae

Hoyo Hongdae had a huge amount of space — open-window seats with that dachi feel, bar seating, and inner tables too. The seating layout was spacious enough to make conversation easy.

Window seats with an open dachi-style feel

With the windows open, the area had a real dachi feel, and along with the bar seats and the tables further inside, the space was really wide~!

Spaced-out table seating at Hoyo Hongdae

The seating was arranged with plenty of room, which made it really nice for chatting. It's a great spot for a date, of course, but also for small group dinners, club get-togethers, or blind dates!

Gender-separated restroom area at Hoyo Hongdae

The restroom, which always feels like a small worry at a bar, was gender-separated and kept really clean, which made me like the place even more!

What's on the Hoyo Hongdae menu, and which highballs?

Hoyo Hongdae's menu had a ton of authentic Japanese-style dishes, from okonomiyaki to teppanyaki to sashimi. The highball lineup went from a basic highball to fruit highballs, signature highballs, and even the option to order a highball made with the whiskey of your choice.

The drinks menu was incredibly varied too haha. Starting from a basic highball, there were fruit highballs, signature highballs, and you could even order a highball with the whiskey of your choice!

What we ordered: okonomiyaki, yakisoba and futomaki

That day at Hoyo Hongdae we ordered okonomiyaki ₩17,000, yakisoba ₩17,000, half a roll of futomaki ₩14,000, and 2 glasses of ade for ₩7,000.

  • Okonomiyaki ₩17,000
  • Yakisoba ₩17,000
  • Futomaki (half roll) ₩14,000
  • Ade, 2 glasses ₩7,000
Full spread of okonomiyaki, yakisoba, and futomaki

Looking at it again, it still looks so good... drooling.

Okonomiyaki loaded with cabbage

Here's the okonomiyaki~~ Generous portion with plenty of cabbage, so the crunchy texture really comes through!

Yakisoba noodles seared on the griddle with bean sprouts

The yakisoba noodles were chewy yet firm, lightly seared on the griddle, and the texture was so good! There was a nice smoky flavor too, and bean sprouts and vegetables mixed in kept it from getting boring — I just kept eating~!

Half roll of futomaki packed with filling

The futomaki was completely packed with filling!! Just one piece was filling enough haha. The fresh sashimi, sweet egg, and the sweet-and-salty savoriness of the fried bits balanced out perfectly.

Plate of fried vegetables served on the house

And then the owner brought out fried vegetables as a service item?! It was savory and delicious~!!

I was so sad I couldn't drink that day, T_T — these were totally the kind of amazing side dishes you want with a highball!! Highly recommend this izakaya near Hongik University Station~~
